McKinney's airport wants some love – at the expense of Dallas Love Field.

McKinney is trying to attract general aviation aircraft to Collin County Regional Airport at McKinney. The sign is located on Inwood, near the entrance to Love Field.

"Through with Love? Cool your jets in McKinney," the city says in a marketing pitch, posted this week on a billboard next to Love.

McKinney's pitch is aimed primarily at attracting corporate planes and other general aviation aircraft to Collin County Regional Airport at McKinney.

"We wanted to put something up to grab people's attention," said Steve Hill, a spokesman for the city of McKinney, which paid $10,000 to rent the billboard for two months.

"For some of the people flying from there, McKinney could be a lot more convenient for them."

With Southwest Airlines Co. now serving Missouri from Love, and American Airlines Inc. set to relaunch service there March 2, it's getting a bit more crowded.

And more flying could be on the way as Southwest continues its quest to repeal Wright amendment restrictions that limit long-haul commercial flights from Love.

Last fall, Missouri became the ninth state that can be served from Love under a slight loosening of the Wright law.

McKinney's airport, 33 miles northeast of Love and 50 minutes away by car, already houses the corporate fleets of Texas Instruments Inc. and Electronic Data Systems Corp. Both used to be at Love.

Traffic has been flat, though, and the airport needs to find customers because it's expanding with a new runway.
