Managua, Jun 4 (EFE).- A cargo plane carrying 50 metric tons (110,000 pounds) of acids and other toxic materials went off the runway at Managua's International Airport on Sunday, but no injuries were reported to the three-man crew or anyone on the ground.
The DC-10 aircraft belonging to Arrow Airlines had departed from Miami and went off the 2,400-meter (7,800-foot) runway as it was attempting to land at 5:10 a.m. (1010 GMT) damaging its left wing, airport general manager Alfredo Chamorro told a press conference.
He added that the plane slid some 350 meters (1,140 feet) after breaking through several fences before coming to a halt on a road on the outskirts of the Nicaraguan capital.
A crack in the left wing allowed fuel to leak out, but firefighters managed to avoid a fire or an explosion, Chamorro said.
The containers of sulfuric acid, organic citric acid, hydrochloric acid, mercury dioxide, methanol and paints - all toxic substances - on board were not damaged, and neither were the containers of compressed gases being transported.
Chamorro said that the cause of the accident had not yet been determined, but authorities think that the plane might have had problems with its landing gear or engine.
The three crewmembers - a pilot, co-pilot and flight engineer - were uninjured in the mishap, but they were taken to an airport medical facility to be examined.
Chamorro said that six commercial flights were suspended due to the accident, and the airport was working to get back to its normal operating schedule.
He also said that no information was available regarding the destination of the cargo, but it was possible that the acids, paints and other materials were slated for distribution to various companies in Managua. EFE
