What's new

" Nero Fiddle's, While Rome Burns"

Soem people didnt leave cause they were stupid, most didnt leave cause they were dirt poor. MOST RESIDENCE OF NEW ORLEANS DO NOT OWN CARS.

My only compaint about BUSH in this whole thing is 1) dont be on vaction all the damn time, and 2) when you make FEMA no longer reponsible for disaster responce, make sure the new bosses (Homeland Security) know what the hell they are doing.

So you proud Democrats: just what has the govenor of Louisana been doing the past few days? She's the one who can use troops to enforce order. Hmmm?

So what did the city of New Orleans do to prepare for a hurricane? Looks like the Mayor and city did almost nothing. They want a handout from the Federal government to fix their problems--made much worse by their own lack of planning/preparation.

The Corp of Engineers didn't get the money they asked for? Why? Because the Corp of Engineers is a pork barrell bureaucracy. Why didn't the city of New Orleans/state of Louisiana protect its city? Because they wanted the Federal government to pick up the tab. I agree it's a federal responsibility to take care of waterways--but not to protect reclaimed swamp land.

The Federal government is the backup, the help when the situation is horrible (which it is), but the state of LA and city of New Orleans weren't prepared and have struggled to act. The only thing they've done well is find someone else to blame.
[post="295906"][/post]
Too bad for the Gov. GW took 35% of LA.'s national guard troops and sent then to Iraq. Too bad for the Gov that those 35% were the troops trained as fire, police and paramedic's. They are guarding Iraq prisoners. Who BTW are faring better by this administration than its own citizens here at home.

Its the fault of the city of New Orleans? But why stop there, lets blame the poorest of the poor for the situation. Like saying the failings of the airlines in the fault of the employees. Not the short sighted management. Like this GOP run government.

Glad it didn't effect the VP, no time frame for the end of his vacation. Although we do know he will be doing fund raising for Jim Talent next week. The sec. of state been busy in NY watching shows. And the Pres, Well poor papi cut his vacation short. Showed his caring by flying down to 2500 feet to see the devastation. Probably looking out the window chomping on a burger and some designer water. Shame we cant find some for the poor staving in LA, and MS. Lets see one trip to a hangar in MS to hear about the devistation, but found time to make 2 trips to california for a birthday party and fund raising. Glad to know where is heart would be, if he had one.

Dear Mr. Bush:

Any idea where all our helicopters are? It's Day 5 of Hurricane Katrina and thousands remain stranded in New Orleans and need to be airlifted. Where on earth could you have misplaced all our military choppers? Do you need help finding them? I once lost my car in a Sears parking lot. Man, was that a drag.

Also, any idea where all our national guard soldiers are? We could really use them right now for the type of thing they signed up to do like helping with national disasters. How come they weren't there to begin with?

Last Thursday I was in south Florida and sat outside while the eye of Hurricane Katrina passed over my head. It was only a Category 1 then but it was pretty nasty. Eleven people died and, as of today, there were still homes without power. That night the weatherman said this storm was on its way to New Orleans. That was Thursday! Did anybody tell you? I know you didn't want to interrupt your vacation and I know how you don't like to get bad news. Plus, you had fundraisers to go to and mothers of dead soldiers to ignore and smear. You sure showed her!

I especially like how, the day after the hurricane, instead of flying to Louisiana, you flew to San Diego to party with your business peeps. Don't let people criticize you for this -- after all, the hurricane was over and what the heck could you do, put your finger in the dike?

And don't listen to those who, in the coming days, will reveal how you specifically reduced the Army Corps of Engineers' budget for New Orleans this summer for the third year in a row. You just tell them that even if you hadn't cut the money to fix those levees, there weren't going to be any Army engineers to fix them anyway because you had a much more important construction job for them -- BUILDING DEMOCRACY IN IRAQ!

On Day 3, when you finally left your vacation home, I have to say I was moved by how you had your Air Force One pilot descend from the clouds as you flew over New Orleans so you could catch a quick look of the disaster. Hey, I know you couldn't stop and grab a bullhorn and stand on some rubble and act like a commander in chief. Been there done that.

There will be those who will try to politicize this tragedy and try to use it against you. Just have your people keep pointing that out. Respond to nothing. Even those pesky scientists who predicted this would happen because the water in the Gulf of Mexico is getting hotter and hotter making a storm like this inevitable. Ignore them and all their global warming Chicken Littles. There is nothing unusual about a hurricane that was so wide it would be like having one F-4 tornado that stretched from New York to Cleveland.

No, Mr. Bush, you just stay the course. It's not your fault that 30 percent of New Orleans lives in poverty or that tens of thousands had no transportation to get out of town. C'mon, they're black! I mean, it's not like this happened to Kennebunkport. Can you imagine leaving white people on their roofs for five days? Don't make me laugh! Race has nothing -- NOTHING -- to do with this!

You hang in there, Mr. Bush. Just try to find a few of our Army helicopters and send them there. Pretend the people of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast are near Tikrit.

Yours,

Michael Moore

P.S. That annoying mother, Cindy Sheehan, is no longer at your ranch. She and dozens of other relatives of the Iraqi War dead are now driving across the country, stopping in many cities along the way. Maybe you can catch up with them before they get to DC on September 21st.

1) Levees were only rated for a cat 3 hurricane storm surge. Built over 40 years ago. Even with the rejected improvements, it still may have failed in the same way it did on Monday.

2) Why didn't the mayor of New Orleans mobilize the school busses and public transport to start evacuating people without cars on Saturday when they were targeted as a direct hit? Same thing with tourists and others once the airport closed on Sunday afternoon?

3) Why didn't the governor of Louisiana have National Guard troops (which are under HER command) activated on Saturday when they were targeted as a direct hit, and staged into safe areas outside the known target area?

4) While you're ranting about Bush's "vacation", where's the big outrage about Congress also being off the entire month of August?.... And with Congress in recess, what exactly is he supposed to do for a month?....

You can blame Bush for putting someone incompetent in charge of DHS and FEMA, however as Buck said, the Tenth Amendment did come into play, and both the mayor of New Orleans and the governor of Louisiana failed miserably in their responsibility.

Where's the outrage with the local politicians? Oh yeah. Both are Democrats. And the media is largely controlled by the Demoncrats.

Which is why all fingers are being pointed at the Republicans. Because the Demoncrats don't want any attention put in their direction, and it's easier to demonize Bush than it is to face the failures of their own people.

Sure, maybe your critisizms are valid. Hell, I dont understand why they didnt use the missisippi, the whole reason the city exists, and put people on barges and send them up the river. Stupid local politicians! But a disaster of this magnitude can only be handled by a federal responce. So the people at the federal level are gonna get a lot of the blame for the aftermath.

Was it not at 10:00AM the morning of the Hurricane that the Mayor of New Orleans finally declared a mandatory evacuation?

If the Gov of my state warned of impending disaster and ordered everyone to evacuate and I get left behind that means I should blame Pres Bush and all Republicans. I should demand the US Government do something for me. I was warned but, hey you... know Geo W lies. If I scream and yell I can get more free from the FED. Yea I know there'll be a lot who will beleive me when I say "I's so poor I's couldn't gets out". Never mind that I didn't try cause 'I's waiten soes I could do some lootin and gets whats mine"
Yes I know there are those are truly in need, but I'm sorry ( and I know I'll catch hell on this one) I don't have a lot sympathy for most of those able bodied left behind.
What about the blizzareds back east in Jan & Feb all our southern bretheren do is laugh and say they are in the 70s and don't own a snow shovel. Well what goes around comes around. They choose to live in a below sea level city knowing the big one is coming. Listen up SFO...
We make choices in life and we must pay for them and not expect someone else to bail us out because of our stupidity.
You play with fire you get burned.
I know It unpopular, but thats the way it is.
OKAY your turn fire away. I'll sit back and... and what? Nothing.. you won't change my mind

I really do expect something better than that from you.

Have you forgotten about about The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Times, Faux News, talk radio and all the right wing bloggers?

Buck said:
And the Feds have bulit levees. There are those that have stated that the current administration has removed funding for these levees?

With those states affected and overwhelmed, the government is responding. If you can do the job better than why have you not left for the effected area? No one really cares what you expect.

The water is flowing from the firehoses, the military is establishing order, people are being rescued and food and water is being distributed and electricity is being restored, thanks to the government that you despise so much.

In your view, we should raise taxes to generate handouts to the states. Your socialistic ideas are for declared Socialist countries - Cuba for example - I will pay for your passage if you would like to move there.
[post="295910"][/post]

The fact is that the Federal Government takes in huge sums of money from the American people and compared to Europe (most of which is Socialist -Cuba is more Marxist) they get very little for their money. As Bush has slashed funding for things that benifit the people of this country, Levees being one of them, in order to fund tax breaks for the oil companies, that are gouging the American Public by drastically raising Gas prices-up to $3.99/gal, he has left this country vulnerable.

Is Bush to blame for Katrina? No. Is he responsible for the lack of response? Yes. As Truman had on his desk "The buck stops here".

We pay more for our military than any other nation. However that investment has not been used to benifit the American people. The American people want Osama Bin Laden caught, they expect the resources of that heavily funded military to be used to retore order and rescue people in the event of natural disasters also. However their investment has instead been used to satisfy the personal ambitions of a small group of greedy people who sought to gain control of the second largest known oil reserves in the world.

So Four years later we have a few thousand troops. less than the number of police officers in NYC trying to hunt down Bin Laden in a rigged country the size of Texas and we have thousands stranded, some dying, because we lack the resources to save them.

In the meantime we have many thousands of troops and Billions of dollars worth of equipement running around Iraq simply because Bush wanted to oust Saddam Hussain, a despot in a world of despots whose only distingushing traits are that he sits atop a lot of oil and supposedly he tried to have the current Bush's father killed.

Natural disasters are just as much in the realm of the fed as an attack upon our shores from a human invader. Just as aid came to New York after 9-11 the country should aid those devastated by this storm that knew no borders. President Bushed pushed through policies that limited the ability to respond to a disaster on the home front. He squandered our resources, leading to the current disaster unfolding in the south and Osama still runs free. The man responsible for the deaths of thousands of innocent civilians still runs free but the man who tried to kill his daddy, after his daddy tried to kill him, has been captured.

As per President Bush the thousands who died on 9-11 will have to wait even longer for justice. I guess he figures he had to wait for years to get Saddam so those who lost loves ones should be willing to wait as long for Bin Laden.

The thousands suffering in the South are on their own because the money of the American People is, in his eyes, better spent killing in Iraq than protecting the American people here at home. His buddies who were cashing in on Iraq and now Katrina has produced an additional windfall here at home as the disposable income of the nation is being sucked up by the largest increase in oil prices ever.

If regular people did what the oil companies are doing as the result of a natural disaster they would be put in prison. This wont happen because of the close ties Bush and his administration have with the oil industry.

Bush likened airline workers to terrorist holding the "hard working" people of America hostage in order to get higher wages and he used his Presidential powers to stop us from witholding our labor but he sits by as oil companies pick the pockets of every citizen in the country.

The fact is the man has done tremendous damage to this country. It is in times like these when that damage becomes apparent. There is no way in a wealthy country where the leaders claim to adhere to Christian values that such suffering, even if the victim bears some responsiblity, should exist. We paid for the resources to mitigate such suffering, but Bush chose to use them to satisfy his own personal ambitions.

May have.

Where's the outrage with the local politicians? Oh yeah. Both are Democrats. And the media is largely controlled by the Demoncrats.

Much of what you are saying could also be said about 9-11 where the attacks happened with a Republican President in a state with a Republican Governor in a city with a Republican Mayor.

As far as the charge that the Media is controlled by the Democrats can you produce anything to back that up?

Which is why all fingers are being pointed at the Republicans.

Well really just Bush. He is the President, he made the decision to bring us into war with Iraq while at the same time nearly abandoning the search for Bin Laden. If the troops and materiel were not tied up there we could use them here.

Because the Demoncrats don't want any attention put in their direction, and it's easier to demonize Bush than it is to face the failures of their own people.

Well when Clinton lied nobody died. Add those who die over the next several weeks to Bush's body count.

Yep, that'd help. AFAIK he hasn't gotten any blow jobs so that we could impeach him.

NHBB, I respect your opinion and you are right. I may have been too strong with the "I's". I recall from personal expiernce living in Wash DC during the MLK riots of 68 or was it 69. Looting was rampant and crowds were out of control. I can understand about hunting for food and water, but TVs, guns, jewelry, DVDs etc just doesn't make sense on a priority of self preservation.
On a side note I do not listen to Rush Limbaugh.
