What's new

New Envoy seats (links with pics)

I have to admit that the seats look incredible and certainly a big improvement over what is offered now. I thought the company stated that they were going to outfit the first five A330-200's with the seats then retrofit the current A330-300's. It would be nice if they were installed before the first flight to TLV but I guess it's better late than never. Speaking of installing the seats, the company has said that it was a delay with the seat manufacturer. Do we know this as fact?

It depends on how you look at it apparently. Sicma unveiled this seat only 3 months ago or so. Assuming that it had passed all certification tests at the time of unveiling, is that enough time to manufacture and deliver the seats given that Sicma has other customers for their products.

The seat design is also flexible in terms of width, pitch and surrounding furniture, allowing airlines to adapt the product as desired.

Ruh roh...we all know what flexibility in design means when it comes to US....

I just hope that Tempe appreciates the bad press they may create with the first 2 332s in the original Envoy configuration. This is potentially a particularly negative situation as these 2 aircraft will be the first US exposure to a new and very vocal country (Israel). There will be an immediate comparison with ELAL, CO and DL and as we all know, initial impressions are very difficult to change, particularly with the casual flyer. I would hope Parker/Kirby/etal. have the wisdom to clearly publicize an expected refit date AND offer the older configuration (as Economy+, NOT Envoy) to Economy passengers above a certain elite and/or fare level.

If you noticed the width of the double seat in this link from aptboeses' post above, it's obvious that it won't fit in the same 2x2x2 space as the current Envoy seats on the A333 - the width across the seatbacks is to great. I suspect that the angle between the seats in each 2 seat unit will disappear, as well as quite a bit of the space between the seats. Otherwise they'll have to go with a 1x2x1 or 2x1x2 configuration, losing at least one seat per row.

In A330-200 training they said that when the new seats arrive and are installed the seat count for coach and envoy will NOT change. The only change will be the configuration. Nothing more was said about it.

2x1x2 would be very cool, but could they really fit 4 rows in the current Envoy space without sacrificing any coach seats?

That thought occurred to me also Jim. What if they angle the units?

Hard to say with nothing be a picture of a 2-seat unit to go by - the width across the seatbacks looks quite a bit greater than the current fore and aft aligned seats. I'm assuming from the picture that these are the "shell" type seats where only the cushoned part reclines while the shell stays stationary. if so how much does the forward edge of the seat bottom move forward in the lie-flat position. The aisle seats might extend into the aisle when fully reclined if angled too much.

Also you'd think the seating company would have various seat configurations based on the wide body A/C currently in use worldwide. With US's penchant for al things cheap you have to believe that they worked out something to get max seats in min space.

I'm sure both statements are correct. What did US1YFARE quote...."The seat design is also flexible in terms of width, pitch and surrounding furniture, allowing airlines to adapt the product as desired." I suspect that it's that flexibility that'll be used to make them fit - narrower total width by reducing/eliminating the angle between the seats in each 2 seat unit, which would alter the "surrounding furniture" that gives so much individual space.

Seats look great! If we get them it's a small step forward to bring us in line with other carriers.

I'm new to posting here, but have been following along for a long time....so be kind.

The seating will be 1-2-1, but with the angle that many have noticed, it allows for more rows to be added in the same space.
So there will be 5 rows of 4 across. The leg room is not lost because your legs go in the open area that you can see on the back of the seats. So your legroom is actually beside the passenger in front of you, not underneath and behind. So they can decrese the pitch between seats and actually increse leg room.

Hope I explained that right. For an example look at DL 777ERs compared to the 777LR. DL can fit 7 rows of the angled seats between doors 1 and 2, as opposed to only 4-5 rows of traditional non angled seats.

On another note. I understand that there is a similar effect in Y with the new slim line seats. Although the seat pitch remains the same, because of the thinner seat back, you get an extra inch or two of knee room.

Can't wait to try both of the new seats.

I have also heard the collapsable serving cart now used on the A330-300 is too wide for the aisles on the -200. Both aisles in Envoy will be narrower because of this new, 1-2-1, "pod" seating. The smaller, collapsable-serving carts now on the 767 are being put on the A330-200. These seats are very impressive. Fingers crossed
