UPDATE 4:45PM ET: US Airways has confirmed to TheStreet.com that it was behind the purchase of the domain names. US Airways spokeswoman Michelle Mohr told them, “The purchase of these domain names, along with other potential transaction names, is simply step to ensure others do not use our marks in a way that might negatively impact our brand.”

What's the new airline going to be named?

And in other news from DomainNameWire.com:

American Airlines bought the name of its Chairman, TomHorton.com, for $1,000. This was a smart move given that the company is about to battle its unions in bankruptcy. Its public relations firm owns TomHortonSucks.com
.

i hope no to merger but if I had to guess the name....American Airline run by US mgmt using AA as the name and the US name disappears

Serious question about the bolded part: Why the assumption that Doug Parker, who washed out of AA after just five years (and at least one DUI) and his management team would be in charge? It's a very common assumption every time the subject of a potential merger of US and AA comes up.

At DL and UA, very old men were brought out of retirement for their bankruptcies, and it was obvious that the CEOs of NW and CO would run their combined entities when those mergers finally happened. Horton, OTOH, is an AA lifer except for his short time at AT&T, and he returned to AA several years ago to help out Arpey (and Horton was promoted to President long before Arpey quit). Parker is several years younger than Horton, but Horton has plenty of experience. So why the assumption that Tempe would rule the combined airline?

Is Bob Crandall a very old man?

Don't forget that Kmart took over Sears after Kmart's bankruptcy.

It's probably worth noting that none of the domain names US bought would likely be used for a merged AA/US, any more than DL/NW produced DeltaNorthwest.com, UA/CO produced UnitedAirlinesContinentalAirlines.net or Frontier/Republic/Midwest produced FrontierMidwestRepublicChatauguaTransStatesEtc.org.

If anything, I'd guess an attempt to head off a "Keep Delta My Delta" website.

Jim

I was basingit very similar to what analyst have said and on the similar paths that DL/NW and CO/UA But US MGMT is also very good at getting the numbers to be where there at in terms of say bag complaints, on time etc DP from what I hear is technically no dummy when it comes to running the show Just needs to get rid of the al hemmingway type
