NWA to Charge for Exit Row Seating

So you have to pay for the exit row seat AND help in case of an emergency. If I had paid for the seat and there was an emergency, I want my $15 back! If i had to pay for the priveldge to sit there they owe me in case I am needed. just my thoughts......

Well no, sir. We only tell you that in the case of an emergency, you might be called upon to operate the exit. If you don't want to, you don't have to.

In training, we cover the scenario where we instruct someone to do something during an emergency and they refuse or don't follow instructions after saying they will. We just get another volunteer and keep the line moving.

🙁 I don't fly to MSP or DTW as my final destination. The only reason I flew NW this year was to build up miles and because I could get preferred seating or at least check my seats on-line to make sure I got at least an aisle seat. My company will not pay the $15. It looks like NW has seen the last of me.

How many NW elites don't get upgraded? I always thought NW was the domestic upgrade king. 16 F seats on a DC 9...

And to add insult to injury if you pay the $15 surcharge and get upgraded, you don't get your $15 back!!

A good idea and added revenue source.

Aren't those pricier first-class seats more comfortable?

Next will be added charges for your luggage, depending on how much it weighs.

"The first 50lbs are free, then you pay..."

Long overdue.

I agree that it's been that way, but with all this talk about retiring more DC-9s and this "Newco" to fly new small jets (which may not have F), maybe more elites will be sitting in coach in the future.

The overweight/oversize luggage charge already exists at NWA. I think it's $25 or $50 to check a bag heavier than 50lbs.

The Coach Choice idea probably won't last very long - it's not a clear value-added proposition for the consumer. It's one thing if the Coach Choice fee included a meal or the guarantee of more legroom, but it does neither.

WorldPerks® Platinum Elite 2006

Dear ______, Your WorldPerks number is .

As you may know, Northwest launched a new product called Coach ChoiceSM on March 14, 2006. As part of the implementation plan, I wanted to make sure that the facts are clearly communicated to our most valuable WorldPerks members. Coach Choice is a test program where 5% of domestic coach seat assignments are available at time of check in for $15 per flight. Elite members also have access to these domestic seats at 36 hours prior to departure via nwa.com® Manage My Reservations. Transatlantic and Transpacific flights are not included in the Coach Choice program.

These domestic Coach Choice seats are primarily a combination of exit row and aisle seats. However, the Select Seating zone remains an important part of the WorldPerks Elite program. Exit row seats and bulkhead seats continue to be available free of charge on all Northwest aircraft. In fact, 65% of exit row seats remain free and are available for assignment to Elite members up to 90 days prior to departure as part of the Select Seating zone.

We know that premium seating is an important Elite benefit. Because of this, Northwest will continue to have a substantial Select Seating zone, offer unlimited complimentary First Class upgrades and offer a higher percentage of domestic First Class seats than any of our North American competitors. Elite members are very important to us. We appreciate your business and value your loyalty.

Sincerely,

Jim Cron
Vice President of Passenger Marketing & Sales

I remember I was doing a flight on a DC10 (forget where to where) and there was a BIG guy sitting in the exit row.... RIGHT where the slide pack bulges out (so no leg room)
He was ticked off....and started to complain...NW ripped him off, I'll never fly NW again, ect. ect. ect.

Tired of his bickering (since I was in the adjacent Jseat) I asked him "Did you request for exit row?"

"yes"

nothing else was mentioned after that.

Here's the new one going around.
😀
