WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama said Monday that the United States should join the rest of the industrialized world and offer paid leave for mothers of newborns.

"Many women can't even get a paid day off to give birth - now that's a pretty low bar," Obama said at the White House Summit on Working Familieshttp://www.myfoxchicago.com/story/25841932/obama-says-us-should-have-paid-maternity-leave#. "That, we should be able to take care of."

I think it needs to apply to men as well. If conservatives believe that two parents are needed for a good family there is no reason the father should not have to off to bind with their new child.

I think Barack wants to eliminate jobs. How many employers do you think will agree to it, or will it be funded by the rest of us through our taxes. Employers are already hiring part-timers so they don't have to pay for benefits, you think employers are going to pay for maternity leave, and exactly how do you determine the period of leave?

Is this really fair to workers who have to pick up the slack? What if this is an employed Welfare Queen and is suddenly putting out kids for the leave of absence? Why must more strain and stress be put on society?

The only reason anyone would see this as a good idea is someone who thinks that there is no way it will affect them. But eventually it will, but rather than admitting they were wrong they will continue to stick their finger in the dike.

Is it me or is that one of the most ignorant statements here in some time?

Because there are so many working "welfare queens" who would have kids to get time off...

Yeah because lots of women have kids just to get time off.
Government money, child support, and paid maternity leave. Sounds like a scammers paradise to me.You ever consider that maybe, just maybe, the parents should prepare a bit before having a child instead of depending on everyone else to cover the cost?

Sorry I don't live in the rest of the world so I really don't care.

WAIT, how about all those countries that have paid leave provide for their own defense so we can keep that money for Maternity Leave? See what the world thinks of that.

YA, you're right .. signals, I mean, afterall.....UR ALWAYS Right.

Why should,..."God Bless the good ol' U S A (Capitalistic at ...A N Y..C O S T...F'n PIGS that they are) want to be like an oppressive REGIME..like (say)..NORWAY, with this paid-time-off...Obama BS like NORWAY has. (or Germany, or Sweden, perhaps Denmark or Holland, maybe Iceland)  ???????

This G D country leaves so much to be desired, that I've lost track counting the ways as the years go by

I don't have a problem with it.
Just 'who' is going to pay for it?
Yea I see it's 'supposedly' only 2% but how many times that once it's "approved" there isn't annual increases?

Didn't 'gas' taxes start low to fund roads then once that gate opened, it became  a pork tax?

You all do know that employers pay matching FICA (6.2%), Medicare (1.45%) also:
Workmans Comp Ins (No Match, employer pays 4.8% of gross),
Unemployment Ins (No Match, employer pays 4.3%),
Employee training Tax (No Match, employer pays .1%)
That's an additional 16.85% Employer has to pay.
Doesn't seem like much but it adds up pretty quickly.
We give 5 days vacation after the first year, we don't have to but we want to.
As a small business owner, I would Love to do more but my net is not there to do that.

Just my 2Cents...

Just hire More POLE SMOKERS.
(see. problem solved)  !!!!!!!!!!!  : )

Who is going to pay for paid maternity leave?... The same people underwriting Obamacare and the $15/hr minimum wage?...

Just amazing.  The right is trying to convince women that they care about women yet at every possible turn they pull the rug out.  The GOP is against health care provided birth control.  They are against a womans right to control her own body.  Now they are saying that a woman cannot have paid time off to be with her child at what is arguable the most important time in the child life.

Definitely a good way to get the womans vote.  Keep up the good work.  Party of family values my a$$.
