Canada's Harper talks oil with China as U.S. faces $4 gas
Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper meets with Chinese President Hu Jintao at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, Thursday, Feb.9,

Just as he promised he would do if the United States rejected the Keystone XL pipeline, Prime Minister Stephen Harper headed to Beijing earlier this week on a four-day trade mission in which he is expected to seek a deal to sell millions of barrels of Canadian oil to China. Since China is aggressively pursuing energy deals around the world to support its economic expansion, expect Harper to come home with an official signature on the dotted line.

Harper is accompanied on the mission by dozens of Canadian business executives, including several from Syncrude, the consortium that produces thousands of barrels of oil daily from the Athabasca oil sands. That's the place the Keystone XL pipeline -- proposed by TransCanada, another north-of-the-border energy giant -- would have funneled 700,000 barrels per day to the United States, if not for Obama's rejection. Some portion of the estimated 20,000 new jobs that would have been created here will also be exported to China.

Meanwhile, here in the United States, besides continued high unemployment, drivers endured the most expensive January gas prices ever, according to the Los Angeles Times. "January is typically a month of falling gasoline prices because fuel demand falters in the slower travel weeks that follow the year-end holidays," the Times reports. "Not so this year."

I can't even begin to express in a non profanity laced diatribe the outrage I feel over this. I swear to God, Porn stars are smarter than this guy we have now. You know what? I'm going to hit "post New Topic" before I type something and end up in the corn field.

I couldn't care LESS where that NEOCON Harper goes !

But the people who need the 20,000 pipeline construction jobs might care and they might show just how much they care at the voting booth and say "Good Bye Empty Suit".

Sadder still is the loss of the thousands of oil field support jobs, pipeline maintenance jobs and all of the administrative jobs lost due to the head moron in the White House. He gave half a BILLION to his cronies at Solyndra and with Keystone all he had to do was say yes and sign a piece of freaking paper. Now China seems poised to ink a deal for Canadian oil all thanks to that big eared Back Bench Junior Senator from IL pretending to be President.

Harper may be a neo-con, however he put his country ahead of his crony capitalist friends which is more than the hero of the Stupid did.

And the Pipeline couldn't/wouldn't address the few valid "issues" (think Nebraska) W H Y ???

Are you referring to the Ogallala Aquifer? here's an interesting snippet on Fracking and the Aquifer from Kansas.

Fracking itself — also called hydraulic fracturing — is not new to Kansas, which was the site of the country’s first vertical fracking in 1947. With more than 57,000 wells fracked in the state, vertical fracking has helped make Kansas the 8th largest oil and gas producing state. Source=The Harvest

The Ogallala Aquifer is beset by many problems. The least of which are some rather dubious concerns raised regarding the pipeline passing through an environmentally sensitive area which IIRC were wet lands. These were concerns similar to the ones raised by the Alaska pipeline which has been a stunning safety success both in people and environmental terms.

I live within a few hundred miles of the Ogallala Aquifer and many communities get their water from the Ogallala Aquifer. This plus depletion from farming is a far far greater issue then a pipeline across a swamp,

We have 3% unemployment in ND because they don't give a rat's arse about a bunch of enviro nit wits from back east. They drill safely and effectively. There is a reason that states like ND, SD, KS, NE and IA have unemployment rates that are HALF the national rate and as low as a third of the rates in some North East states. Dumb assed regulation being one of the primary reasons for intractable unemployment in places like RI.

It also comes as no surprise that the states in the North East where Unemployment is highest also have the highest concentration of Obama Lama Ding Dong supporters, Cause & Effect?? I'd say so.

You may want to check out the Nebraska legislature and the Nebraska governor. Annenberg Classroom
Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman recognizes this, even as he supports his state lawmakers using the special session to seek alternative options. “The key decision for current pipeline discussions is the permitting decision that will be made by the Obama administration,” he says. “Which is why I have urged President Obama and Secretary of State Clinton to deny [TransCanada] the permit.”

Just in case you have not looked the republicans hold a 17 seat majority and the governor is a republican as well. They have blocked every route that TransCanada has put forth. They are set to present another proposal but have been told that the Nebraska legislature will not make a decision before Sept.

I am sure you would have been thrilled had Obama over ruled Nebraska and forced the pipe line on them right? I know you have no use for state rights.

I am sure republicans in Nebraska will catch hell for their insolence. I will not hold my breath.

U.S. to decide the Keystone XL pipeline's fate
The decision rests with the State Department since the pipeline would cross America's borders. A decision is expected sometime before the end of the year.

The pipeline would pass through Montana, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. It has received support from the governors of all the states along the route, except Nebraska, where it would pass over a critical water source.

"I want to emphasize that I am not opposed to pipelines. I am opposed to the proposed Keystone XL Pipeline route because it is directly over the Ogallala Aquifer," Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman said.

In a letter to President Obama, Heineman asked that the pipeline be rerouted because it could have detrimental effects on the aquifer, which provides water to farmers and ranchers.
TransCanada says building the pipeline would put 20,000 Americans directly to work during the construction phase and add an expected 118,000 spin-off jobs. The project would also, the company says, pump $20 billion into the U.S. economy and increase personal income by $6.5 billion.

But a report released this week by the Cornell University Global Labor Institute questions TransCanada's job creation claims.

"The project will create no more than 2,500-4,650 temporary direct construction jobs for two years, according to TransCanada's own data supplied to the State Department," according to the report.

The Cornell study also says there is strong evidence to suggest that a large portion of the steel pipe will not be produced in the United States.

TransCanada refuted the study.

"In regards to the Cornell document, it has multiple erroneous and misleading statements that ultimately lead to incorrect conclusions," said Terry Cunha, TransCanada's spokesman.

TransCanada to push ahead with part of Keystone pipeline

In a statement Monday, White House spokesman Jay Carney said Obama welcomes TransCanada’s plans for the southern pipeline segment, and he pledged that the new application for the cross-border section would receive a thorough assessment.

Moving oil from the Midwest to the world-class, state-of-the-art refineries on the Gulf Coast will modernize our infrastructure, create jobs, and encourage American energy production,” Carney said. He added that the administration would “take every step possible to expedite the necessary federal permits” for the segment.

As for the Keystone XL pipeline segment from Canada to Steele City, Neb., Carney blamed House Republicans for forcing a rejection in January “by not allowing sufficient time for important review or even the identification of a complete pipeline route.” He stressed that Obama “in no way prejudged future applications” and that the administration would base its decision to provide a permit on the completion of the review.

You can't blame GOP on this, after three separate studies over a couple years, all said ok. Obama had to appease his radical green base going into the election, why else would he say he'd screw his base, I mean make a decision after the election.

See Ms Tree's posts. It would seem the Nebraska Governer (republican) does not want this to go through. Go ahead and go on record here and now saying you want the Federal Government to override the governer and his concerns.
