Powerful lawmaker from Minnesota outlines plan to stop ANY deal in the industry.

Thank you Mr. Oberstar,

Oberstar is completely powerless to stop mergers; too bad impotent Congressmen feel the need to sound more important than they are. Whether NW is merged with someone else will be determined by the Justice Dept, not some idiot Congressman.

Good point about maintenance - where was the bombast when NW was busting AMFA?

After Dougs webcast and proving that Northwest beat Wall Streets forecast, I think there should be no mergers. Both Northwest and Delta are proving that they can survive as stand alones. Wasn't this merger about economics? ya right!

Oberstar probably wants this merger, but since he has no say in the matter he shouts NO MERGER. The games people play. And yes he could have had a say when the mx were taking a beating. One hand washes the other.

Right there skippy!

Remember how it was the DOJ that killed the Dubai ports deal instead of Congress??

Oberstar can and will block an unfavorable deal for NW.

The two situations aren't comparable at all.

A veto-proof majority of Congress was outraged at the sale of the ports to potential al Qaeda allies and threatened to pass legislation banning the sale. The next day, the owners announced plans to sell to AIG instead.

Except for politicians in Minn and Mich, nobody in the country will be outraged at a merger involving NW. Congress won't be passing laws prohibiting a NW merger.

Like it or not, this is nothing more than impotent grandstanding by a politician.
