Oil Prices Hit New High On Supply Fears

Maybe I'm just a dumb old hick, but would someone please tell me where the "Valley" is?  I've been to Los Angeles several times, and from what I can tell, it's flat (valley-like) all the way from Burbank to Santa Ana.  That's not very specific. 😉

"The Valley," as it's often referred to, is the San Fernando Valley in the northern part of the city of Los Angeles. LA is relatively flat from the coast northward and northeastward to Brentwood, Bel Air, Beverly Hills and Hollywood where you then run into the Santa Monica Mtn. range. (Not exactly a mountain range, but more like a collection of tall hills). Nonetheless, on the north side of the range is a broad, flat valley called the San Fernando Valley. In this area of LA, you'll find Studio City, Encino, Van Nuys, Tarzana, Reseda, etc. This area was credited (or blamed) for spawning the whole "Valley Girl" phenomenon. That would be the bubble-headed, gum-chewing, ditzy girl image that was so, like, rad in the 80s. Fer sure! They, along with their surfer dude boyfriends are, like, the epitome of, like, the vacuous Southern California youth stereotype.

Then there's the Antelope Valley where the Los Angeles en route center is (in Palmdale). It's not too difficult (but not trivial) to get a tour of the site (of course, they want to see ID for security 🙄 ) which I highly recommend.

Geez, JS, you're not a dumb old hick - but, as Stewguy86 pointed out, Burbank, Studio City, Woodland Hills, Northridge, etc. are in the San Fernando Valley - "the Valley." Most of the Valley was annexed by LA about 90 years ago.

I second the recommendation for the tour of the Palmdale facility.

Maybe Warren knows something. I saw a
report on NBC Nightly News tonight with an
oil analyst who predicted 15 cent per week
drops in unleaded pump prices beginning
in October, and ending in December.
That would take gas prices back into the
sub $2.00 range.

Oil futures lost 4% today on the recent
market analysis, and it will only go down
from there. I hope the oil futures
speculators lose everything they own
when the market bubble bursts and
oli prices "right size".

The NBC analyst likened the current "frenzy"
in the oil futures market to the late 90's
tech stock speculation. We all know how that
turned out. A lot of people were disappointed
and I sincerely hope there are many oil
speculators who are counted among the
"disappointed", and very soon.

Th greater good will prevail, and the greedy
will die on the vine that currently feeds them.

Ever notice the HOLLYWOOD sign, it sits atop a mountain (maybe large hill) between the SF Valley and Downtown LA. The Griffith Observatory is also on that moutain.

Little trivia, it's called Mt. Lee.

I will be the first person to admit that
I am a bit extreme from time to time,
but SOMEONE has to be. If everyone in
this country just plain lays down and
takes the abuse that is happening right
now with oil prices, then surely nothing
will change.

My beef is with the inaction of our
government. The LEAST they could do
is make a good faith effort to try and
fix the oil situation, but strangely, they
don't seem interested. Coincidence
that GW and Cheney are ignoring the
problem while they and their "friends"
are profiting? I think not.

People are sheep plain and simple. They take what's handed to them, complain a little then move on. I remember the last time the economy tanked in this country. Greenspan and company were moving the interest rates up and telling everyone that all is good. They moved it up just a 1/4 of a % at the wrong time and the economy started to spin down and there was nothing anyone could do to stop it. I'm concerned that we are entering just another cycle. Between the high cost of gas, rising interest rates, real estate and stock markets ripe for selloffs, we could see another correction. I'm no stock broker and no economy guru, but we are approching a time of traditional high consumer spending and I can't help but wonder how these fuel prices are going to impact all that. Also, it gripes me to watch gas stations changing the prices for fuel they already paid for. Whole thing seems like a rip to me.
Anyone remember what precipitated the Windfall Profits Tax during the Carter administration? Is this the same sort of situation or am I completely off base? Not that "W" would do anything anyway. I'll NEVER vote Republican again!

Well I can tell you this. I drove 800
miles this weekend, GSO-PIT and it
cost me $82 for gas. That's NOT
acceptable. There is no reason
we should pay more than $1.25/gal
for regular unleaded. The vehicle
I own is not an SUV, it's a mid size
sedan with a V-6 and by my calculations,
it gets about 25 MPG on the interstate.
My average price per gallon was $2.53.
Enough already. People need to stand
up to this boosheet.

Well, I'm with you on that, but...I remember when there were knowledgeable people screaming that there was no reason we should have to pay more than $.30/gal. At the time they were objecting to the unconscionable run-up to $.75/gal during the first Arab oil embargo. Some of those people were proposing that we invade the Middle East, take control of the supply, and bring the price back down (Oh, and introduce democracy to the Middle East at the same time).
