October 14, 2005 - in MSP, in an address to pilots at the NATCO building, NWA CEO Doug Steenland referred to Flight Attendants as "overpaid vending machines"

If the flight attendants had walked out when AMFA members did perhaps Mr. Steenland would have a different opinion right now. I can't see how flight attendants could expect fairness in negotiations with such an attitude.

If he really did say this I would say he is ignorant.........
Maybe if we could put him through the replacement FA training he would change his Tune.

Our former CEO (Dave Siegel) of US Airways pretty much said the same thing about our flight attendants a few years ago when we were in round 1. He said that "Flight Attendant is just an entry level position". Hmm I wonder if Steenland and Siegel would like to stand and say these things in front of the AA and UA flight attendants who were murdered in DC, New York, and Shanksville on 9/11. Is this man related to Frank Lorenzo? All the best to you guys at NW, you sure do not deserve any of this!!!!

Might be tough to do since none survived.

Looking iat it from his position he's right. That's what they do 99.9999 percent of the time. Sure there is that chance that there may be an emergency on board that might need attending to, however, you need to give the pax's some credit. They will get out anyway they can in an emergency. It's human nature. Good luck to you. It will be a long road ahead with your employers having a BK judge in their pocket.

I wouldn't be giving passengers so much credit. We now have to ask passengers siting in the emergency exit row if they know that they are actually sitting in an emergency exit row and are willing and able to actually operate the exit if need be during an emergency. Why do we have to do that you ask. Well, it seems that after some recent accidents, passengers sitting in those rows had no idea that they were sitting in an emergency exit row and would need to open that exit in the event of an emergency. Even though it is said on average 3 times over the P.A. system before take off. I guess they just thought the were lucky to get the extra leg room. If we are going to talk about people getting paid too much for doing routine things and possibly never doing what they are actually getting paid to do, lets talk about pilot salary. I don't begrudge any pilot making a good living. But if we are vending machines, then what are they? I mean the planes today can even land themselves with only minimal computer input. So, i guess you could say they are well paid systems analysts. Nice try, but your observations are flawed.

P.S. I don't think pilots are overpaid, possibly underworked, but not over paid. My family says the same thing everytime I come home from a trip safe and sound.

If the Fas are overpaid vending machines then what is Steenland? It must be pretty easy to run a company into BK, my guess is that anyone of those overpaid vending machines could do the same thing for a lot less money than Steenland is getting.

Bizman, maybe with a little bit of luck, it will be you who will find out how valuable those FAs are instead of those who have respect for what they are trained to do.

So I guess job of any person killed during 911 isn't entry level?

The fact that they died has nothing to do with it being entry level or not.

The longtime head of National Airlines (back in the days when airlines had longtime heads), 'Bud' Maytag, on frequent occasions denigrated his pilots as "overpaid bus drivers". Needless to say, National's labor relations were generally less than cordial.
Stupid thing to say 50 years ago, still a stupid thing to say now.

Overpaid vending machines?

Sounds like Doug and Dave stole the line from Crandall, who said back in 1993 something along the lines that he'd replace galleys with Coke machines if the FAA would allow him to....

The fact that some people choose to make a career out of an entry level position doesn't change the fact that as long as you have a GED and a clear criminal history, you have the basic qualifications to be considered for a job as a flight attendant, fleet service clerk, or agent.

It's hard to believe that a corporate CEO would say such a thing, even if he believed it. If he did, he's a boorish dolt and it's not hard to see why NWA is in the condition it is under his leadership.

Winglet,

Regarding the "boorish dolt" comment. I believe Frank Lorenzo said, just prior the CAL flight attendant strike, that flight attendants "shouldn't " have mortgages.

It seems that NWA management is attempting to provoke a work action.

I would think that any educated consumer would not want to fly NWA, given its scab maintentance and unamerican sentiments. I suppose NWA could paint its planes in the good old Red, White and Blue ala WalMart and get the suckers to feel good about flying on them.

Then again, the other airlines could respond with a Pro-America appeal. "Our employees are Americans!" for your comfort AND safety!" "English is our first language."

This should get really interesting.

Starting now, cold turkey any pilot at your airline could train and qualify for a fa position in a matter of weeks. Now take any fa and put them into intial equipment training for any fleet and see how far they get.
