Eight of our Dash-8-200 model aircraft are being returned to their leasers at the beginning of the year.

That takes us down to 49 aircraft.

Any word on possible furloughs or is there enough attrition to offset the loss of airplanes?

Jim

prop, where are you getting your info from?

that sounds like the rumor from earlier this summer, last word from HP (mclelland townhall in sby) was that current fleet plan thru next year...

Still short on FAs right now. New hire classes have been cancelled. PDT is trying to get ahold of some old -100s that have been parked for a few years to replace them.

This info is straight from the PDT conference call this week discussing the next years schedule and fleet changes.

Roanoke flying will also be impacted. Dropping to 13 PDT flights a day next year. CHQ is taking over the ROA-LGA legs, Air Wisky and PSA will be operating more PHL-ROA and CLT-ROA.

Are you serious? More old -100s are all we need. It's been so much fun with the winter weights with the winter weather. I had a flight with a max of 31/38. Inventory has the aircrat capacity at 35, but there are few of the -100s that seem to be able to take that. We are a kinda long flight for the Dash though, so it might just be us.

I do hate to have the PDT crews go through even more upheaval. Even through everything you guys are still the best (at least the majority).

With ROA downsizing and ORF/PHF already there, is more flying shifting up north again?

One with common sense would think that they would want to keep the DH8-200's because they more carrying capacity, and let the long in the tooth -100's go back...then again why should I be surprised?

UNLESS they are being replaced with more -300's or perhaps Q's? Then again I can dream can't I?

By the way does ANYONE have any ideas about what they plan for ISP? I see they are going from 6 to 5 r/t a day to PHL, I just hope they don't go below that because they are about the only airline left at ISP other than Greyhound Air.

Sorry to hear that Prop, too bad it's not out with the old in with the new. Did I read somewhere that the proposed merged fleet would include 57 turboprops?

I've got some new and more accurate info regarding the aircraft lease returns.

(1) -8-100 and (1) -8-200 have already been pulled off line and are being prepped for return.

8 more, or the remaining, -8-200s will be returned at the beginning of the year. This makes ZERO total dash 8-200s at PDT and minus 10 aircraft (a 17% fleet reduction).

This info was confirmed through our maintenance control.

That leaves (35) -8-100s and (12) -8-300s flying for now. And our management has yet to explain what is going on to the employees.

It makes absolutely no sense to get rid of a more capable aircraft.

I hope they are preparing to add some airplanes, PropPiedmont, and please keep us informed--I fly Piedmont regularly from ISP, and would love to see you guys grow! A larger turboprop such as the -300 or Q400 would really make sense for PDT.

My best to you all....

US is cutting PI and Air Wisconsin Airlines is getting their investment back. ZW is very involved in the decisions at US

Piedmont Airlines management will be sending out a letter in regards to the downsizing by the end of the week. Once I receive it I will post it under this thread.

I wonder if that explains why our city is going to have almost a 5 hr break in Jan sch from like 2p to 7p.

Q. Is there any chance of Piedmont seeing the Q400?

A. There’s a chance, and not just one in a million. The company is evaluating the economics of the Q400, which is a fuel-efficient aircraft. No decisions have been made, but the company is carefully considering the Q400 as a successor to the Dash 8.

From The Hub Q & A.

I hope so- I commute on Piedmont and they're great!

The 400 rumor has been around as long as I've been at PDT. The original problem was scope. US Air scope prevented PDT from operating the 400 (pre-bankruptcy).

US Air could have been the US launch customer for the Q400 and would have got a killer deal on their initial order ($10 mil each). Scope prevented that from happening and Horizon was able to cash in.

The current problem would be the manufacturing back log. Unless a new production line is opened up, there will continue to be a 2 year back log. Horizon is hiring to staff their next 20 Q400 orders, but due to manufacturing delays, they get the aircraft with little notice. This is causing new hire class delays and extended reserve time for the new hires.

Yes, the Q400 would be nice, but as Parker said, our East Coast route structure doesn't make a good fit for operating the Q400. All the old long haul Dash 8 routes have been taken over by the RJs. As for the Western longer haul routes, Mesa has an exclusivity clause in their contract with America West to be the sole express operator out of PHX until 2013.

We need new equipment, our fleet is getting very tired. We expect to hear this week about the loss of the -8-200s and their expected replacement aircraft. Right now it looks like PDT is trying to locate some more worn out -8-100 models to help cover the 10 aircraft we will be losing.

$$$$$ is the bottom line and unfortunately we will pay the price by continuing to operate yesterdays technology into tomorrow.
