What's new

Pilots already pulling the ejection handle on AA

Last time I checked Obama doesnt own AA nor run it.

And you can thank Ronald Reagan and Elizabeth Dole, they changed the FARs to permit foreign overhaul of US based aircraft.

Or Jimmy Carter whom signed the Airline Deregulation Act.
Good Union Demorat that he is...

Jimmy Carter did not change FAR 145 that would be Reagan as President and Elizabeth Dole as Secretary of Transportation.

Try again.

on point again dave, there has not been any real push to expose the airlines and it still baffles me that the several unions representing airline workers have not joined forces and resources to fight from a position of strength instead of letting us fall one by one.

One real question is where is the TSA? They have been working on a security plan for foreign repair stations since they were originated after 911.

Every airplane must undergo some amount of line maintenance prior to flying a longhaul intercontinental flight back to the USA (ETOPS check or overnight check), right? By definition, that maintenance occurs in a foreign country. Should every overseas flight carry a few TWU-represented AA employees from Tulsa or Fort Worth to perform any necessary maintenance so those greasy ferriners don't get near the AA airplane that is clearly too sophistimacated for them to understand, let alone maintain competently?

Those greasy ferriners left the squibs out of a 757 ow slides during a maint check in EZE one time.I just happened to be involved during a A check....oops

And there's been 11 years with Democratic Presidents appointing Secretaries of Transportation since - have they changed it back? Clinton cared more about dipping his cigars in places they shouldn't be and Obama cares more about funneling taxpayer dollars to big contributors pockets than either cared about union workers.

Politicians from both parties will do whatever gets them elected or re-elected. With the Democrats having the unions in their pocket, they rarely pay more than lip service to union concerns and never to union member concerns. Of course, at the top level unions are often more concerned with how much dues money they get than representing the workers. They'll fight tooth and nail among themselves to represent groups for the dues, but when Congress passes something they don't like it's "Oh well, maybe next time" as they continue to funnel money to some of those who voted against union member interests.

Of course, on the issue at hand, it doesn't help that unions representing mechanics treat all out-sourced or off-shore maintenance facilities as nothing more than shade tree operations doing shoddy maintenance. It was a U.S. maintenance facility that caused the Valuejet crash in the Everglades, not some off-shore MRO. If airline X has heavy checks done by AA or DL, do AA or DL then do shoddy work? Power by the hour is big for engines these days - is the engine manufacturer (or outside shop chosen by them) a shoddy facility for engine overhauls, regardless of where it's located? When's the last time any airline recapped it's own tires, repaired it's own plane's radio/radar antennas, manufactured all replacement parts, etc? All airlines outsource, it just a question of how much and to who.

Jim

I suppose it doesn't matter that US mechanics do maintenance on foreign airlines while they are on the ground here.... and there are MROs in the US that are full of maintenance work that is done for foreign airlines.

The issue is the FAA rarely visits foreign MROs and the workers are not held to the same standards as US mechanics.

Try what again?
I think Reagan was not a friend to labor (even though he was a union president and a reformed demo-rat).
He was a republi-rat, mostly a politico-rat.
Our gooberment is selling us out.
We have a class of professional politicians living in an aristocratic/oligarchic world.
I haven't seen a 'political' party that is for and by the people in quite awhile, have you?
B) xUT

Nope, thats why we need a labor party.

Glad to see that some Pilots are publicly expressing concern regarding outsourced maintenance.
If I were them, I would be very concerned also.

Mr. Lister is correct when he says the public is unaware.

If our Union would spend their time and money correcting that instead of playing politics and building websites as petitions, we would begin to reverse the destruction of domestic maintenance operations.

TWU and the AFL-CIO could make a difference if they would focus on a public campaign against foreign maintenance.
Nothing better than recruiting the guy/gal flying the aircraft to help get the message out into the publics eyes and minds.

While I agree that it's horrible that so much maintanence work is outsource.
It's kind of hypocritical of pilots questioning AA doing so. I fly with lots of pilots
that commute to work on Delta,Usair,JetBlue,Southwest,United. Never once have
I ever heard them that they were concern for their safety flying any of these airlines.
