Who is responsible for the pumpkin orange vests that most everyone is refusing to wear?

Is it the color that's the problem? Would you prefer a weathered gray/tan instead? Something that doesn't stand out as much?

Or is it the cut or style that's the issue? Perhaps Dior or DKNY or YvSL could be hired to design a more satisfactory vest?

You must be referring to the goofy vests that the East rampers have been required to wear for the past few years.
Just another bunch of worthless crap, that serves no purpose. I worked the ramp for over 20 years before these
"Safety" vests were used, and never had an issues with the crew knowing who was directing the A/C. These vests were my former Managers numero uno concern with the ramp operation. At one point, he wanted everyone to wear one. At that point, I asked him how the crew would be able to tell who was really directing tha A/C?? He gave it a few seconds of thought, and said "I guess only the guideman needs to wear one".....They continue to make a simple job more difficult all of the time....

Must be a matter of perspective I guess. We've been wearing them at American for about ten or so years now.

The ones we are issued weigh less than a pound, whats the problem?

The way people drive on the ramp, I'd wear the flashing fire chief helmet from Radio Shack if I thought it'd help keep me from getting hit.

They call it a "Safety Vest" not a "Director's Vest."

You wear it so one of our highly trained, vigilant fleet service staff doesn't run over you with a lav truck or belt loader in low viz or darkness.

Or so you don't get run over by a tug, fuel or catering truck, or an airplane.

They are mandatory at many European airports, even for flight crew doing exterior preflight inspections.

Why would you not want to wear something that enhances your safety? Let me guess, you don't wear a helmet on your bike or motorcyle either.

Actually at US/East the only people required to wear it are the marshaller/tug driver and wing walker.

In maintenance we were the first to wear them as we use to do reciept and dispatch.

Just wait...I have to wear one to do the walk-around up in Canada. Soon, everyone will have to wear one on the ramp; including management!

It is interesting that it does not matter that your ID is in view anymore, as the vest covers it. As a matter of fact, the upper part of your uniform is covered by the vest. I guess OSHA (and the Canadian version) has more power than TSA?

In the States your SIDA badge must be on your outer most garment above the waist or the FAA will ticket you.

The problem is that the vest is a Pain in the ### to deal with when wearing rain gear or a parka. All of the jackets that we have issued, already have a reflective stipe on them anyway. If you can't spot a guy wearing a bright Yellow rain jacket, you should be travleing with a seeing eye dog to begin with. I have no problem with safety at all, but this is just some guys idea of a false sense saftey. Just like to truckload of cones that you have to put around the A/C as if it were a constuction area. I have seen guys hit an A/C with and without the cones there to warn them. All of this stuff is just an attempt to cover up the bunch of morons that are now being hired to work around the A/C. I witnessed THREE rampers whack the end of an RJ wing WITH the stupid cone barrier in place. They were destined to hit the A/C no matter what. 😉

All personal at ramp level YYZ and YVR wears the orange vest. They even have one for the pilots on a hook in the jetway. It's possibly a Transport Canada rule.

The vest is a pain in the a@@! They are to big normally and you cant work in it all the time it can catch on equipment and bags so you have to put it on and take it off for every flight. They get really dirty and get lost all the time like gettin stolen when your tug on your gate drives away with you vest in it.

Solution:

Make a work shirt that has a safty color in it and reflective color tape.

If manangement wants people to cover there work shirt with those nasty dirty looking vests just make a work shirt with it built in for safety..

If a connects runner is reading his complex sheet and talking on his cellphone at the same time, no safety vest will save me from becoming ramp roadkill. It's not a question of if...but when... 🙁
