Ramp worker accident PHL

It is with heavy hearts that we inform all employees of the passing of Walter Bailey, a PHL Fleet Service employee. At approximately 3 p.m. EDT yesterday, a ground service equipment vehicle accident occurred near gate B13 at Philadelphia International Airport. Walter was treated at the scene and taken to the hospital. He died later from his injuries. He was 22 years old and had been an employee with US Airways for ten months.

We extend our deepest sympathies to Walter’s family and friends. Our foremost concern at this point is for his family and Walter’s colleagues in Philadelphia. Please keep his family, friends and fellow employees in your thoughts and prayers. This is a tragic situation and we will work with the family to support them throughout this difficult time.

The CLT Fleet Service Grievance Committee organized a short vigil today at 1:30est with a moment of silence and a prayer. It made me feel good that huge group came together in prayer of the passing of one of our own. It is times like these that I am reminded that we are a family.

Our deepest thoughts go out to family of Walter and his family at work.

Thank also to Dave L. in PHL for being there for your brothers and sisters. Your compassion for your fellow workers shined as you helped so many of your brothers and sisters through an emotional event. I admire how the workers in PHL rise up during a time such as this and show selfless support.

I like this idea too. Call me crazy, but I think if we can get a Fleet Senior Director aboard we can make this happen too. One minute of the operation would be worth it. While I don't think we NEED a Sr. Dir, I believe it would be of tremendous help. With one of them pushing I think it would be entirely practical to have EVERY Fleet Service agent on duty at that time doing this, and probably pretty much everyone else there, be it CSRs, management, crews, MX...

you guys should really coordinate for all workers---fleet, csa ect....pick a time lets do it....stop working for a few minutes to reflect the great loss...many lose perspective and unfortunately...this brings it back....

"Does anyone know what exactly happened, and why the cart/tractor flipped over?"

What "happened" is that this young man tragically lost his life. The hows and why's and when's and where's don't really matter right now because there is a family in terrible pain right now. This incident will obviously be investigated, and if that investigation produces policies and procedures that increase safety and accountability on the ramp, then so be it. As a former ramper, I'm all for it. But right now, a young life has been tragically lost, and all that matters right now is helping his family, friends and colleagues get through this trying time. May he rest in peace.

Two memorial service held on the ramp =gate B13 today for our fellow brother Walter Bailey.
Fellow brother Chauncy gave both sermons to all the grieving employees at PHL and there were many. Chauncy urged everyone to please work "safe" in our dangerous environment. Many friends of Walter reflected on what a wonderful young man he was, how dedicated of an employee he was and what a great father to his children. The loss of our brother Walter was devistating to every one of us. God bless his family at this sad time.

Pretty low act on the part of management! This was an employee killed at work perfoming his duties. He was a liked kid just starting out life with a family. I would like to say many would have liked to attend today but the . bottom line it came down to money and most cant afford to take time off. What's intresting management let workers all go vote on the past contract and officers elections and they all pulled together to cover each other for these union matters. The workers could have easily done the same thing today if managment didnt get cheap and many more workers could have attended todays tragic farewell to a fellow union brother.

May he rest in peace. I had heard that he was married and had some kid(s) but dont know. As for the company, how low can they go geeze. that is very very sad and very pathetic on mgmt. totally uncalled for by mgmt. it is a nowonder that mgmt is so well hated at US and probably around the world!
