Had two friends at work today get called back to their old PSA cities. TUS and SJC. Both turned it down since one has kids nearing graduation age and the other cant afford anything in California any longer. If you were displaced from the West coast many years ago, you might get the chance to return!

Displaced employees who maintain active employment within the Passenger Service Group will maintain recall rights indefinitely, providing they have not refused recall.
(Furloughed agents have 3 years for recall).

the other cant afford anything in California any longer.

Can anyone at this airline afford anything in CA anymore? Can anyone at all afford it?

Back when the West Coast stations got whacked in '91, many of those displaced who sold their houses in CA were astonished at what they could get in CLT. That's how some doctors and lawyers by Lake Norman wound up with US C/S and ramp agents for neighbors! Think how much CA property values have gone up since then.

I have family out in the Bay Area and they bought a house for $50,000 back in 1979. They sold it in 1999 for $390,000. They could have probably gotten more for that, but they wanted to sell fast. It just amazes me how people out there survive if they don't have a decent wage.

In answer to your second question: No!!!!

I'm lucky that I bought my condo in 1997. I could never afford to buy it today....and I am a mid-level executive in the entertainment business. The LA Times real estate section had an article a few months ago that stated that the household income required for a median-priced home (around $500K, give or take) is $150,000. I've got news for you: A family with a household income of $150,000 cannot afford a conventional 30-year mortgage on the median-priced home unless they are "trading up" from a property bought prior to 2003!!!

Does US pay higher wages to employees who live in areas where the cost of living is astronomical?

Only in SFO, where it is required by the city's "living wage" ordinance; any company doing business with the City is required to pay it.
(But that is nowhere near the what is needed to buy a house in the Bay Area.)

Does that just apply to SF City Residents Only?

Are you kidding me?? They don't pay us livable wages anywhere!!!! <_<

I just had to tell you I saw my old Supervisor from SNA in PHX today. He got recalled to SNA and was in PHX for training, says the other Supe was also offered recall but he was flying or another airline and refused. Turns out another full time agent working in PHX (NOT PSA) was offered recall to HIS city back East, It looks like the tide is starting to turn 🙂
