i heard that using your registered guest pass is more expensive than just getting a companion pass (more $$$ taken out from paycheck then if you just paid companion pass)...does anyone know if this is true?

I think it depends on the market.

The way I understand it, the taxes deducted from your check for a registered guest is based on 10% of the Y6 fare. So, if the Y6 fare is $700.00, then you are taxed as if you had $70.00 in additional income.

For companion pass, the taxes are based on the difference between the YGST and YCMPN ($10.00). If the YGST fare is $50.00, then you are taxed as if you had $40.00 of additional income. (This, of course, is in addition to the $10.00 paid for the YCMPN fare)

Keep in mind, though, that registered guest travel is unlimited-we only got 40 flxi passes per year (and it takes 2 to be used as companion pass)

They are completely different things.
A registered guest is for anyone who does not have a spouse or domestic partner to pick 1 person to be able to travel on their pass for the year at no charge. The value of their travel will be included on your W2 as earned income and you will be taxed on 10% of the Y fare point to point for each of their flights as the value of their travel, but there will be no out of pocket expense.
On the other hand, companion pass, buddy pass, etc are not added to your income, but they have to pay up front. It is currently (on the East side) 10% of the full Y fare plus taxes and you get 8 a year. In the near future these will be a fixed amount based on the mileage (plus intl taxes if any.).
West side still has flexis floating around for a while so the value is paid for by the person using the ticket and it depends on whether they are doing guest or companion travel.
You can still have a registered guest for the 1 person free travel for the year as well, but I believe the registration period for this year was up back on the 31st.

Anyone with a better explanation is free to chime in. 😉

The (current) companion/guest pass is slghtly different on the west side. IN addition companion and guest are different things.

The guest pass fare is different in each market, and the fee is paid totally up front. It requires one flexi-pass.

The companion pass only costs $10 up front (plus 2 flexis), but the difference between the guest pass fare and the $10 is taxed as income. In addition, to use the companion fare, that person must travel with the employee.

but my question is...i understand what the difference is btwn the two but i was told that using a registered guest would cost more than just purchasing a companion pass and i was wondering if anyone has experience with this

I can see how this can be possible

Next quarter companion passes will be based on mileage not percentage of fare. The question is, will registered guest continue to be taxed on a percentage of Y fare or will they go to a milegae formula too. If registered guests continue to be taxed on a percentage basis than they could possibly cost more in a high fare low mileage route which are more prevalent in the east network.

Anyone know the answer or should I send an email off?

I know my girlfriend flew A LOT, even more than me which is really saying something. It tacked on a lot of "extra income" to my earnings but from what I saw really didn't make that much of a difference when I did my taxes last year. If she would have flown on companion passes it would probably cost me triple. I still have yet to do my taxes for this year, and we flew internationally a couple of times, so I'll have to see in the coming weeks how it really played out.

The "price" difference between a Registered Guest and Companion pass are not near eachother.

A Companion pass is basicly an ID-90.. meaning you fly STL - NYC on USAirways, the ID-90 would probably cost $70.00 each way, PLUS taxes, or about $165 out of pocket.

If my registered companion flies the exact route, I am "taxed" for an additional $140 on my taxes (they only compute income on the base fare), so basicly it may only *COST* me about $15.00 in actual money.

So $165 vs $15......
