Oh, there are lots of differences...
- They didn't set up barricades to block the view of Mount Rushmore
- The memorials in DC stayed open
- They didn't try to close the ocean like they've done in Florida
- They didn't close down crab fishing in Alaska
- They didn't kick out residents or people living in private homes on Federal lands
- They didn't close down the lodges and other concessions run by third parties at National parks.
- They didn't block off beaches along National Seashores
- They allowed states to fund operations at National Parks (e.g. AZ footed the bill to keep the Grand Canyon open)
- They didn't hold busloads of foreign tourists locked up in a hotel
- They didn't padlock the outhouses in National Forests
No previous White House has sought out ways to inflict pain on the general public the way this one has tried, first during the sequester, and now during the partial shutdown.
Were some services interrupted in the 90's? Sure. But not to the extent and with such deliberate intent that this administration has shown.
When all is said and done, *how* the shutdown was managed is what people will remember, not the shutdown itself.
The repeated bills sent to re-open parts of the government will be remembered, and so will Harry Reid saying "why should I?"....
