I cannot recall a single time when a sitting US president was challenged for a second term by his own party. Not saying it can't/won't happen but I doubt it. Obama will run in 2012, whether he wins or not is too far off to tell.

I guess Reagan challenging Gerald Ford doesn't count? Didn't Bush 1 have some early competition for re-election?

I do not remember the Ford/Reagan issue. I thought Ford said he was not going to run for a second term. Either way, if it does happen, it's very rare and I doubt that 2012 will be one of those times.

Of course Palin and Clinton will not run in 2012. I do not believe Palin has any political future. I would not be surprised if Clinton tosses her name in the hat in 2016 though.

Ronald Reagan challenged Gerald Ford for the Republican nomination for President in 1976.

Ted Kennedy and Jerry Brown challenged Jimmy Carter for the Democratic nomination in 1980.

MA already has a requirement for universal coverage; they have a majority of independant voters; they have a higher than US average of Union Workers.

BHO has a plan that seeks to tax plans described as "cadillac;" many of the MA coverages required qualify as "cadillac."

MA voters would have been forced to pay even more for something they already have plus better coverage for states like NE that would not be affected in the same way.

Brown told the voters he would look after their interests, Coakley told voters she would look after Washington interests: is anyone surprised that Brown won?

The outcome is a direct result of local concerns, emboldened by national protest and political incompetence at the national level.

Don't over simplify or over complicate. Tip O'Neil was right: all politics are local.
