What's new

Some true gentlemen and an epic event worth remebering.

WHO gives a SHITT !!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh I don't know! These were men of honor and courage, Attributes currently not in evidence with the current resident of 1600 Pennsylvania Blvd. Can you say Benghazi? I knew that you could.

These men showed the enemy that the USA was not going to fold like a cheap suit over a few bombs on Sunday morning Dec 7th. They were of the "stuff" that made this nation great and for you to make the comment you made says far more about YOU then it doesn't about them.

With one comment I have lost a great deal of respect for you. What a disrespectful thing to say.

While I'm in a mood to honor WWII vets and ignore the ramblings of a moron let's not forget the brave sailors of Taffy-3 and the battle off Samar

It should be noted that ONE Japanese Battleship outweighed the entire Taffy-3 fleet that engaged the Japanese. The story should have been a movie years and years ago, perhaps soon. One of the captains earned the Congressional Medal of Honor. It's an amazing story.

“This will be a fight against overwhelming odds from which survival cannot be expected. We will do what damage we can.”

With these words, Lieutenant Commander Robert W. Copeland addressed the crew of the destroyer escort USS Samuel B. Roberts on the morning of October 25, 1944,

Was Taffy the the guy who ran head on in the battle and took out a few ships before having to abandon his ship? I seem to recall a story about that. I do not have the time top look it up right now. OK, I looked it up and I think I saw this battle on that milt channel where they have animated reenactments of the battles. If its the one I am thinking of the Johnston was the one that went head long into battle and suffered huge damage.

I remember thinking that this is an example of where insanity and heroism meet head on.

Yes, It was Captain Evers of the USS Johnston who was last seen steering the ship from the deck (Bridge blow off) missing part of his arm saluting the crew of the Samuel B Roberts as they went on the attack. God Bless the "Tin Can Navy" and those brave men.

No it didn't contain any tongue in cheek, It was a stupid thing to say and I for one resent it.

I took a ride in a B-17. Loud as hell and I was pretty convinced they went to Lilliput Land to find fliers. Small and cramped.

Now just imagine the "comfort" of being in one, at far below freezing temps, with 1-2 hundred German fighters extending away overhead, with the knowledge that they're coming back to dive down and do their very formidable best to kill you in a very few minutes. All Americans and the whole frikkin' western world owe much to those then young men. Suggested reading: http://www.amazon.co...r/dp/0806134224

If the Red Tails were escorting me I would not be worried about dying. As I recall, they never lost a bomber to enemy fighters.

Edit. I was reading some articles on them and discovverde that theyactually lost 25 bombers while under escort. The bombers were lost on the following 5 days une 9, July 12, July 18 and July 20, 1944 and March 24, 1945. Still an incredibly impressive record considering they flew 205 missions.

"insanity"? And this is why you would need to gain a whole new personal paradigm to be at all even slightly useful in any battle. There was no other duty-bound, and entirely rational choice to be made there. The tiny destroyers were faced with overwhelming odds. Without closing to "up-close-and-personal-distance", the little ships' weapons were entirely useless. Those they needed to protect were far slower than the approaching Japanese armada. What else does one do in a gunfight, when only armed with a pocketknife, but close and attack?

The only people that'd think such a reaction to be at ALL "insane" are burdened with an obscene excess of entirely fantasized, personal self worth.

You really DO believe any and all "politically correct" BS, don't you? Life isn't a "politically correct", Fantasyland movie. Truth is that over 2 dozen bombers fell with their escort, which does nothing whatsoever to diminish their very capable service record. I've much admiration for the Tuskegee gents, especially after having the privelege to talk with a few at length. Truly amazing men and Aviators...none of which were even half so infantile and basically stupid as Hollywierd chose to portray them as. Those guys were/are a sharp bunch.

The historical significance of the efforts of the Tin Can Sailor have been wildly under emphasized!. MacArthur and the invasion force would have been totally exposed to the remaining military might of the Japanese Navy which was considerable still and the invasion force eliminated or driven back to their landing craft.

Heroism comes to some for many reasons. America's most decorated soldier in WWII, Audie Murphy was asked why he charged the machine gun nest and his answer was "I was afraid I was going to die"

"I was afraid I was going to die"

Indeed. Note though; that he found no reason to eschew performing his Duty in that. He could have simply cowered and cried like a baby...and likely died. To the leftist-"make the world safe" obamanites...such rational thought towards direct action seems "insane". 😉 The whole word's supposed to be a "safe" and "secure" little rubber room. 🙂 Precious few are unafraid to die. What seperates us from the rest of the animal kingdom is our ability to make rational choices that sometimes necessarily, transcend our own self-interest. Those that can't are nothing more than talking animals.

Don't forget we have thumbs too LOL

I was never a draft dodger since I wasn't drafted for Vietnam. However I had made the decision to become a war resister and go to prison instead. No cowardly trip to Canada.

I started looking at what was happening over there in 1972 and it actuall dawned on me watching the news footage of an anti war demonstration where it showed a poster that said:

Who are our General in Vietnam?
General Motors
General Dynamics
General Electric

Even my hero Dr Paul who was a doctor in the military who cleared pilots for combat said if he knew then what he knew now he would have likely refused to participate. Thus began my anti government Libertarian beliefs. It's also why I honor those who served in WWII as they were the last US Soldiers to fight in a war declared by Congress.
