Spirit pilots strike. Merged topic

It started today. Picketing starts tomorrow in Mirimar. Support for this professional group is needed. The company wants pilots to fly into the mountains of South America exhausted. What they are proposing is absurd--no longevity increase unless you fly at least (if memory serves me) 850 hours per year. So if you are on reserve, you never move up! They want to eliminate the 4 days off between the six day trips. They don't want pay increases and want to cut pay. They want to only offer health insurance with high deductible plans. They want to cut the 401k match (there's no pension). This is while they made over $100 million during the worst recession since the Great Depression.

And word on the street from people who have been contacted, is that managment is contacting people with little flying experience to be contract (scab) pilots in the case that there is a strike.

So they want 152 pilots flying an Airbus into South America and Central America? Are they kidding? Would the FAA even allow that?
This is very interesting, is this the same Spirit that NWA AMT's went to during the AMFA strike? Wasn't the current AMT's there at that time having a card drive that just got all screwed up when the striking AMT's came in? If the pilots do go on strike will the AMT's support this strike or maintain Scab flown aircraft.

Hey Spirt Pilots,

Saw your bill board yesterday going south bound on I-95 and Marina mile, just before Fll airport. Loved it, simple, warning the public

that you may be on strike and call the airline.

I wish you luck,

Good luck to you all. UA pilots are behind you 100% and have been participating in your picketing events when able.

As for getting contract pilots, that can't happen on Spirit metal since it would take many weeks to get pilots trained. I did read that management is trying to get other airlines to cover their flying. I think ALPA should / will keep track of any pilot group that flies struck work. UA is prohibited from adding extra sections to cover another airline's legally struck flying. I'm sure most other airlines have the same protection in their contracts.

I wouldnt think it would be the big boys that would be doing this flying. I'm thinking more along the lines of MiamiAir, Pace, SkyKing, Allegiant, Casino Express type of operations. Also the DirectAir types ---Flights are Public Charters operated by XTRA Airways, USA Jet & Vision Airlines, Inc.

Vision has already declined. ALPA has called around and can't find anyone who has picked up the flying. The company sent out a press release today confirming what was already evident from the schedule--they are cancelling flights.

Well things are looking like the strike will happen. First the company sends out W.A.R.N. notices saying it's shutting down. Then they send out press releases a few days ago saying they are flying and contracting with other carriers. Then today they sent out the notices I referenced above.

Today the company showed up at negotiations and then got up and left.

So, I fly tomorrow and will be left in at my destination and then try to find my way home. Then I have to get to my base to participate in any job actions and get my vehicle.

But life is good. We're resolved. If the definition of seniority changes to needing to fly 840 hours/ year to move up a year in seniority for pay, everyone is in for a bumpy ride. And all we want is to be paid the industry standard for our class of airline--not any percentage more.

Since I'm Captain, I get to say who is flying. I'm going to fly the trip tomorrow since it may be my last.

Thanks for the support. Peace out.

Good Morning Captian,

I was reading on Airline Pilot Central that the CP and DO of Spirt have steped down, reported their refusal to fly, that's something right there, if it's so.

Being resolved brings peace, huh.

All the luck in the world!!!!!

Thank you. I'm walking the line in FLL now. There are so many people here in support. So many showed that it's staged in two areas. There must be 500 people picketing. Rumor has it that BB went to DC today. We hope they will finally sit down and be reasonable. That's all we want.

After extending the deadline twice, to 2 AM and 5 AM, the parties were unable to reach an agreement on compensation. We didn't want a strike; we wanted a fair contract.

I thought it was a little quite this morning when I woke up, just live north of FLL and get an automatic wake up call when take off's are to the east. I'm impressed that you were able to keep talking in to the early morning. I'm proud that you are standing your ground for what is just, deserved, and needed.

Hope our pilots can help you out

Baldanza is scum.

It is high time for this profession to stand up and the Spirit pilots are the first. More will follow. It is far better to put these types of operations out of business than to continue to allow unrealistic air fares to continue on the backs of the employees.

If ALPA had any nuts at all they would call for a nationwide 3 day SOS to put the pressure on.

Good luck to the Spirit heroes. They are the front line in the battle.

Read the RLA and other ALPA represented pilots', CBAs, wildcats are illegal.
