Tuesday's cancellations left thousands of passengers stranded at Dallas/Fort Worth Airport. Planes were more than 80 percent full on average, making it difficult for travelers to find empty seats on later flights.

D/FW AIRPORT -- In one of the worst travel days since 9-11, Dallas/Fort Worth Airport ground to a standstill Tuesday as waves of spring storms forced cancellations of more than 1,000 flights and stranded tens of thousands of passengers.

American Airlines canceled nearly half of the 2,200 flights it operates daily worldwide -- with nearly all departing from or arriving at its D/FW hub -- on both the main carrier and its regional partner, American Eagle.

About 125,000 passengers were affected worldwide, nearly half of the total passengers flying the airline, American spokesman John Hotard said.

The cancellations Tuesday were among the most in a single day since Sept. 11, when the nation's aviation system was at a standstill for four days.

"This is one of the most vicious thunderstorms that we've seen at this airport in several years," said airport spokesman Ken Capps.

The problems at the airport came during a busy spring-break travel week when many families with children crowded the airways. The planes Tuesday were averaging more than 80 percent full, making it difficult for travelers to find empty seats after their flights were canceled.

Travelers today can expect long lines at D/FW as thousands of fliers stranded Tuesday hope to find an available seat. Airline officials recommended that those traveling today check their flight status in advance and allow plenty of extra time at the airport.

The problems likely won't be fully resolved until as late as Thursday, Capps said.
