The White House stated, “Under this agreement, the U.S. will apply a 15% tariff to nearly all Japanese import products,” adding, “For natural resources and pharmaceuticals not naturally produced in the U.S., separate sectoral measures can be applied to adjust mutual tariffs to 0%.” It further noted, “Japan will provide groundbreaking market access opportunities for U.S. manufacturing, aerospace, agriculture, food, and energy producers,” and “The Japanese government is working swiftly to increase its purchase of U.S.-grown rice by 75% and to implement a plan to buy $8 billion worth of U.S. agricultural products and related goods annually, including corn and soybeans.” Regarding Japan’s $550 billion investment pledge, it said, “These investments, selected by the U.S. government, will create jobs, expand manufacturing, and ensure American prosperity for generations.” Additionally, it specified that Japan will not require additional testing for U.S.-made automobiles that have passed safety certifications and will purchase U.S.-made commercial aircraft and defense equipment.
