I had a good friend who lived in Canada who was sent home to die because she was too old and did not fit the scale for treatment. She went home that morning and died in her kitchen at lunchtime with a heart condition that could have been treated with surgery. "Free" health care is great if you fall in the range where treatment and life expectancy are at a good ratio.

I read one of the Obama options for 'universal' health care was rationing services ...and part of this rationing will be denial of service due to age and condition...even going as far as preventing paying out of your own pocket.

That was the way Hillary was going at it.

This will be a very sad state of affairs if it comes to be.....but then ,how else will one control the growing aging boomer's?

We can play the coulda woulda shoulda game all day. Hard to tell what would have happened. Going back to the cold war. Part of the agreement I believe was that Germany not spend all that much on Def as we just gout out a second war with them. Same with Japan. As for a carrier fleet. Had we all been developing alternate fuels that carrier fleet would not have been needed, at least not for protecting the oil supply.

I do not know how the Germans would have fared, probably not as well as they have. I have always know the Germans to be very frugal. After they bombings, the people would be out by the bombed structures, sorting through the rubble brick by brick and stacking them and cleaning them to rebuild. I have a friend whos parents are survivors. They save everything. Twist ties, plastic bags, no food is thrown out.... etc It's a very different culture than that of the US. Better in some, worse in others. In so fa as survival I believe they are better at it than the US. They have endured more and understand it better, or at least previous generations had. Not sure about the current German generations.

Do you have a link for that health proposal? I don't think there is a snow balls chance in hell of something like that gaining any traction at least not the pay part.

Theoretically, I can see denying a smoker a lung transplant and giving it to a non-smoker. Smoking for me is the easiest due to the fact that there are no health levels of smoking. Too me it's a simpler good/bad equation. Eating and drinking involves far more levels of gray. I guess we can start a new thread on this if we want to continue but suffice to say that some folks may not be deserving of medical care if they ruin their lives of their own free will. In reality I do not think there is any impartial way of deciding that and the people in general would never tolerate it so I don't think it will come to pass unless times are very drastic.

I'm not playing "coulda woulda shoulda". I'm just pointing out the fact that Germany got a preety good return from the US tax payer footing most of the bill for the defense of Western Europe during the Cold War. If Germany have had to pay for it they would not have the gernerous social porgrams that they do.

Had everything stayed the same you are probably right but there is no way of telling if that would have been the case. If they had to spend more on their own defense, that may have resulted in other discoveries (as a result of need) that decreased cost elsewhere or they could have gone belly up. No way to really know. That's what I meant by the 'wouolda coulda shoulda comment.

Had I washed my car my self instead of taking to a car wash I would not have been rear ended but who knows what else would/would not have happened.

At the very least, I'm glad we have a President whose exceptional communication skills are exceptionally good as opposed to exceptionally poor.

You can be on one side or the other, but if you're communicating your message to me and have the ability to at least appear to be intelligent, you're going to get farther than if you have difficulty putting words together to form sentences.

Obama's oratory skills meet or exceed Ronald Reagan, at least in my opinion.

hmmm i haven't gotten that sense from listening to him speak ... but then again too many americans watch MTV these days so they might not be able to pay attention when someone speaks without a commerical break for more than 5 minutes .
