still a rumor but i just talked to a tampa cust service agt said he heard it was gone. also there were 2 company officials in tampa today and it was rumored that they were here for that very reason..this is still only hear say. should here more tues.

Fact. I just got a call from another mechanic at the Tampa hangar. They are in the process of shutting it down as we speak. Another sad day for US Airways. I should be out the door myself here real soon. It was a fun industry to work in while it lasted. I think I'll be looking outside the industry for work. Good luck everyone.

Under our contract, the company would still have to pay the employees until they get furloughed or excercise their senoirity, cant see them sending them home with tool boxes in hand all the boxes have to be personally checked out my the employee and management. But we shall see, heard from a reliable source tonight, layoffs expected to be announced tomorrow.

Here's what is known. TPA heavy Planning cannot be reached in either of the 3 main tracks..or the drop in track as of 0100 this morning. That's Odd in itself!!

Conversations with TPA Stores brings us this. A formal announcement about TPA Heavy shutting down is expected as early as 0300 EST today.

Stories are....TPA Heavy sent home the 3rd shift tonight...with Tool Boxes going out the door. (Rumor for now)

Fact TPA Heavy has one Acft in the hangar as of now. That would be Acft 718 with a due out time of 2300 on the 26th (Today)

Fact. All the.Airbus Door Mod kits were shipped from TPA to CLT last week....I have eyeballed them myself in the CLT Distribution Center. So that much is fact.

I was told that High Ups in CLT Heavy...along with mechanics are slatted for Airbus Training at an excellerated rate....Close Friends confirm thier training slots!!

Rumor....The additions required to perform future S-Checks on the Airbus Fleet in TPA were going to take an additional investment of major capital....to better ready the facility for it. The costs are supposed to be un-justifiable to the BK Judge and U itself , with CLT being in thier opinion 'Under-Utylized to it's precieved potential.

I will monter this situation...as info becomes available. Good Luck to all...this is going to hurt big time!!

Tonight I flew flight 245 from DCA to TPA and upon arrival we talked with TPA IAM personnel. We were told:

1. The company flew the last aircraft in the hangar from TPA earlier today and there are no aircraft in the hangar bays at this time.

2. Every night since the hangar's inception there has been an aircraft in the hangar. Tonight there is none.

3. Corporate Security arrived in TPA today. The TPA personnel told us they believe these personnel arrived from CCY to provide security when the official announcement occurs tomorrow that the hangar has been sold.

I do not know if the company intends to close the hangar or not and the information I reported was provided by station personnel earlier today.

Chip

According to DECS in Sabre there are three airplanes in TPA hangar and we do not own the hangar, the hangar is owned by the Hillsbourough County Aviation Authority and bonds were issued to build it, we lease it from the HCAA.

I do not have any new information, but as a TPA planner (on my weekend, so a bit out of the loop) here is what I know from over the past few days:

1) The whole computer fiasco. TPA disappears from the computers and no one has a straight answer why. The Foreman are entirely out of the loop.

2) The TPA closing rumor has been around for years, but management always would kill it quick. This time, silence.

3) Sudden and extreme planner cuts. The Planning staff was nailed with a substantial layoff about two weeks ago. After the cuts of last year, the planning department was understaffed - the latest cuts were to a skeleton crew of floor planners. Four days a week, only one planner for three airplanes on 1st and 2nd shift. I got bumped and took the furlough, effective in a little over a week.

4) Strange scheduling changes. They were bringing in an Airbus for a day or two, to complete 3 or 4 overnight (one-shift) C-checks. Very unusual. Possibly to get some green time built in for a disruption in the overnight checks?

5) A lack of visual progress for the S checks. As of three weeks ago, Larry Montford (TPA Director of Maintenence) was insisting that the S checks were on their way. However, there was absolutely no work happening towards that goal, with the exception of some rather nebulous planning. Also, if the S checks were coming, the planning cuts would have been absurd - since they would need all the people laid off and more to staff the new work.

6) Lastly, NOT TO START A RUMOR THIS IS JUST CONJECTURE!! There apparently has been quite a few clients interested in the TPA facility. FedEx, who bought our IND hangar (identical to TPA) is building a huge sorting facility across the street. There is also a construction project of unknown purpose next door to the hangar. There have also been rumors that DL and WN have been interested. WN is building a brand new WN only terminal in TPA, starting in 2003. They could be a potential client. DL has a hangar next door to US, but with their financial problems right now, I doubt they'd be a serious candidate. Then, there is the unlikely possibility that the hangar might remain as a line facility, for US.

Thanks to the years of working night shift, I haven't been able to sleep tonight. I'll keep checking the local newswires and let you know if I hear anything official. You know that it's official US Airways policy that employees need to hear bad news on the news before they hear it from work!
as of friday 11/22-rumors in PIT were dealt with from management were as follows:[BR]IT IS A RUMOR UNTIL CONFIRMED BY CORPORATE.WE ARE NOT SAYING ANYTHING UNTIL ANNOUNCED BY THE COMPANY.THIS DEALS WITH THE CLT RUMOR AS TO TPA MOVING TO CLT AND THE CLT ENGINE SHOP GOING TO PIT. [BR]this our official response.see tommorow.
I just got off the phone with TPA Stores as of 0245. The routine stock shipment truck from CLT has arrived...and the driver was concerned about anyone being there to off-load the truck.

Acft 718 has been backed out of the hangar too....this was the last remaining Acft in there. This is confirmed!!

I have been told by MOC in PIT , that Tom McMullen of Heavy Maintenance is present in TPA as of this time too.....and a 0300 announcement seems to be the time of a firm announcement.

My sources in TPA have promised return phone calls....unless the are simply escorted out? Which they fear will happen. According to my sources...No Stores Foreman is currently present....and Tool Boxes have been seen being moved to peoples private vehicles.

The last observation prior to 3rd shift starting was the view in the hangar parking lot. My sources said that the number of cars present tonight..looked like , what you would expect on a holiday weekend during normal times. Sure a few are going to take vacation during the Turkey day week but it should not be that noticeable 2 1/2 away from the actual holiday itself.

JonC......zip me an E-mail later this morning !!!

The hangar doors are closed in Tampa. Everyone is being sent home never to return. 10 days to go somewhere your seniority will take you. More layoffs systemwide. What an industry we work in.
