Things AA "can" afford

You can spin the situation all u want. The fact of the matter is we are doing more work with less people the savings being generated by us is going elsewhere. The time has come for us to take our share of the pie. If its not going to happen then shut the place down or better yet get what you want in bankruptcy. Most could care less about either outcome.

He may not be Jewish but he's certainly saving up ...

Actually, he is Jewish by most accounts. Go re-read what I said...

Not that any of you guys pay too close attention, but jet fuel prices are up about 35% year over year. My guess is that AMR is on track to be paying between $2B and $3B more for fuel in 2011. That's going to hit some carriers harder than others, and it may wind up leaving a few of you guys rethinking that contract y'all rejected.

Dont think so, because oil is still not as scarce as A&Ps. Fuel costs arent really a big deal unless some carriers have hedges that allow them to get fuel cheaper than others. That doesnt seem to be the case and the carriers can pass those costs on to consumers. If anything the increased cost of fuel, that we need to pay in order to heat our homes and drive our cars to work, that we have not been able to pass on to our employer for the last 8 years, is even more reason why we need to hold out for more.

In Europe they've had $5/gallon "petrol" for years but does AA say to its mechanics there "Look we have to pay more for fuel here so you need to work for less"? No, they pay their mechanics over there around $45/hr plus they dont take back $3000 for Medical, or only pay them half pay for the first two sick days or only give them one weeks vacation for the first five years. So if they dont get to pawn off fuel costs on their mechanics there why should we do it here?

As fuel goes up it makes mass transit more economical, and the airlines are a form of Mass Transit.

Besides most of the price increase is purely an emotional response to whats going on in the Mideast. By the Summer things will likely settle down. Especially if Obama pushes harder for developing alternate energy.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but AA mechanics overseas are non-union, and AA pays them $45 per hour with all the perks? Maybe we're better off being non-union? Plus, we can save $700 for membership fees that get us a calendar and t-shirt. Oh, you only get the t-shirt if you attend a union meeting. At ORD, lots of t-shirts available.

Bob, if it's just an emotional response to Egypt and Libya, then why has the price of Jet been rising steadily since last September??

Because refineries shift capacity from Gas, Diesel, Jet-A to home heating oil.

And the problem is a refinery hasnt been built in over 30 years in the US, usage has grown, but refinery capacity has shrunk.

I bet it won't affect the upcoming PUPS!

Is this another anti-Semitic Jews=Greed/money canard?

Not anti-Jewish at all, Josh - I really respect their traditions and the Jewish culture.

I am, however, anti-dumbass and anti-know-it-all, as in your case. Please go away and find a site gear toward 10-12 year olds that might respect you.

Consumer gasoline prices have been high in Europe for years, but jet fuel in Europe costs AA (and all other airlines) roughly the same as anywhere else in the world - the high excise taxes on gasoline are not applied to jet fuel.

AA's line mechanics in Europe don't have any overhaul base colleagues that are paid in lockstep, unlike here. No surprise to me that they're paid a higher wage than you. Most major airline mechanics in the USA are now paid more than you, right? Perhaps because UPS, FDX, and the others don't have a Tulsa or AFW.

As fuel goes up it makes mass transit more economical, and the airlines are a form of Mass Transit.

That purported "logic" fails. Higher fuel prices make buses and subways more economical - but higher fuel prices make a less-fuel-efficient mode of travel even more costly. For most distances (perhaps all of them), flying generally requires more fuel than surface transportation on a per-passenger mile basis. Jet engines have become more efficient over the years, but flying takes a lot of energy compared to rolling across the earth's surface.

Besides most of the price increase is purely an emotional response to whats going on in the Mideast. By the Summer things will likely settle down. Especially if Obama pushes harder for developing alternate energy.

AA (and all other airlines) paid substantially more for fuel in 2010 than they did in 2009. Even prior to the Tunisia and Egypt (and now Libya, Bahrain, etc) uprisings, fuel in early 2011 was up compared to 2010. Emotional response? Maybe. But why it's expensive isn't the issue. The fact is that the spot price of jetA is hovering around $3/gal. That was the average price AA paid in 2008 when it (and other airlines) lost billions of dollars. Perhaps prices will moderate this summer. If they don't it looks to be a very rough ride ahead.

<_< ------- Delta pledges One Million $$$ for Japanese relief! ------- So where are you "American"?----- You know by using that name, it carries a great responsibility that goes along with it! Not only does it represent an Airline, but also a great people. So when I hear the term "sky Nazi" invoked, connected to that name, it rubs me in the wrong way!------- This thread is call "what AA can afford", so step up to it AA, and match Delta's offer, and live up to your name!!
