Transition

this is AMERICA WEST AIRLINES ... and while you don't give a rats ass about our going on's in our company , WE don't give a rats arse about you ... or your luggage etc....If America West no longer exists ,If TWU is no longer our union , and if US AIRWAYS is now one compnay and i'm an IAM member ..... why am i still getting paid the substandard wages of an America West ,TWU worker when the same person in the supposedly same union for the same company on the other side of the country (east ) is getting paid substantially more than i ?
There is nothing that says one company must have one union that represents a given job. Is there such a clause in either the TWU or IAM contract?

All that aside, I see your attitude as an anomaly amongst most of your peers. Do your brothers and sisters really not "give a rats arse" about the customers? That's not been my experience so I guess I'm lucky you haven't handled my bag <yet>.

Your wage is not substandard. It's what your membership voted on. If you felt it substandard, you should have asked your TWU to get more back when it was initially negotiated. Your East counterpart gets a wage that he may also feel is substandard, too. Let's put it another way...if the TWU and IAM contracts were exactly the same by coincidence, would you still be pushing for one unified contract? Would you have your 'East vs. West' attitude?

In case you've never worked outside of a union shop, by the way, there are pay differences in most lines of work from one person to the next in the same job. But those are typically based on performance and experience. Your contract does neither. The 10th year guy who is a slacker and does the minimum amount of work gets paid the same as the guy next to him who has also been there 10 years and busts his hump because he has a good work ethic and genuinely cares for the company and knows where his paycheck comes from.

The bad rap given to unions is the stereotypical attitude that you've exemplified here. Thanks for enlightening us.

The NMB certified the IAM as the single bargaining representative.

Single Carrier Status under the RLA and NMB rules.

The only reason the CWA/IBT association was recognized as they gave up their change of control grievance or the company was going to fight the association to the NMB and not recognize it.

Two unions dont represent the same classification at any job.

PHL: the west contract is a contract from 2000 it became negotiable at june 2005. Now the company/managers since 2005 have made multi-million dollars from merging these two airlines. The company refuses to negotiate a transition agreement in good faith. It refuses to pay snapback provisions that the company agreed to when they were in bankruptcy. They refuse to give the fleet a reasonable 2007 living wage. Im glad you fly us because it pays the bills, however if the employees arent happy than neither will the customer in the end. Most employees do go above and beyond but when that stops (because we dont have to) you will be affected.

The pay rates under that TWU contract were way too low at the time. The part-timers voted for it as it was a pay increase. Senior rampers voted for it as it benefitted them and to hell with junior folks. Most of the people that voted for that contract left through the revolving door years ago. It was a piss-poor contract at the time as it is now.

sorry phl but you seem to know next to nothing of our "situation " here in the west ,and as far as me being an anomaly i sm far from it , i should dare say that most ALL of the work groups are disgruntled ..

As far as me giving unions a bad rap , if by sticking up for myself and my fellow american's , is bad then i don't want to be good . (hence the screen name freedom )

Decent pay (key word DECENT , not lavish )isn't just a union issue , it's a moral issue , at least as far as i'm concerned in this country ... I do not like to see my fellow americans working 2 jobs just to make ends meet in life ...
I could go on about the nuermous social problems that all tie into this , such as increased pressue on our standard of living from illegal aliens ,or how most americans no longer having sufficent savings and use credit cards as a safety net ... but that strays beyond the subject , which is simply that the company OWES us west workers under the IAM contact the wages we are due ... it's printed on paper , there's not much to debate about it ... furthermore i remember a memo from the company saying it wanted to make sure we were treated fairly during this merger etc ... well i ain't feeling the justice here .

Hey Freedom lets get something straight. First of all most of the East employees are older and have more time than the West employees. Some of us have health issues being older and need to use sick time every now and then. We also have colder climates and are prone to colds ,flu etc. in the winter months. The issue about sick time is this. You call in sick you get full pay for every day you have on the books. The East calls in sick they get no pay for the first day, half pay for the next three days and don't get full pay till the fifth day. How do you like them apples? 🙁

You know what? You're right. You guys are a bunch of old sick men. We deserve to be paid much less than you. We need to be happy with our low pay. The sooner off we learn our place the better off we will be.

We in the west should take the advice of the wrestler cum actor, The Rock: "shut your mouth and know your god dam role".

You all did vote in the TWU and your lower wage CBA.

Time to step up and put pressure on the company.

Work by the book.

They can't do that! They all still have their heads up Doogie's arse. You people still think the sun rises and sets in Doogie and his boys and they are the ones that are keeping your wages down. You Westies take everthing said and twist it around to make it sound like you are the only ones getting screwed. It seems to me you all have this inferiority complex because it always comes back to its all about me. You ain't even got a clue. Grow up! 😛

i wouldn't say we have our heads up his ass , BUT we do respect the man , in proffesional terms , or at least i do at any rate . The man is a brilliant CEO , he's done things with America West airlines that i don't think ANYONE could have done , and when he saw a chance to advance this company to the next level he grabed it and made the merger happen .

On the other side of the coin that doesn't mean i agree with the low wages i and others are getting .

Hmmm yes the sick policy you have does suck , but i'd gladly take it over the really low wages i'm getting now. We've been informed of the general outline of your contract , but all things considered i'd rather be under yours than where i'm at now ...

to reply to the comment "Westies take everthing said and twist it around to make it sound like you are the only ones getting screwed"
We may not be the only one's getting screwed ,but i tell you this , if you on the east are getting screwed once a day , we're getting it three times , and their using sandpaper!!! it's really a matter of perspective , if we traded places most of us would be very happy living under your current contract , but i doubt you'd like ours...
To summarize , once again we X twu workers had no choice in what's going on now or where we are , but as that we are IAM now we expect IAM pay ...
