Union WALKOUT cripples port of Los Angeles and Long Beach !

Lots of union workers in the drydocks and shipyards at those ports. Also, most of the petrochemical workers at the plants that dot the shores of the ports are union.

Methinks EOleson is wrong on this one. At least he continues to hold out hope for the demise of the middle class. In that he is consistent.

Petro workers are going to start offloading cargo now?
Your demise of the middle class is in work from 1600 but your eyes glazed over a long long time ago.

I'm preety sure the ILA members on the Gulf Coast will appreciate the added work. More members and increased bargaining power if this comes to fruition.

This theory launched by Eolesen could VERY likely fall under the heading of "Penny wise, and Pound Foolish"
Here's why,
Could certain shipping companies have a hypothetical route of Shanghai non-stop to New Orleans, via the canal ? Of Course.
But the considerable extra time it takes to go to N O, as opposed to Seattle is MONEY, meaning any big chinese shipper IS going to pay extra for the Ship, though less for the port call.
Don't forget, that the ILA is going to get the same money for it's members in N O, as the ILWU gets for it's members in SEA.
By the time the cargo of TV's dock in IAH/MSY, the same TV's are already on the shelves in BOS/NYC/PHL, having been 'Zipped' Eastward from SEA, by BNSF/CSX.
Trust me, this has been tried before, and hasn't worked because (back to the ol' saying) "Penny wise and Pound Foolish" !

Fixer,

Why do i get the ol'.....Lets build a bigger/better/newer Illinois Airport in "PEOTONE" feeling, when I evaluate this Container-Island Fantasy ???

Striking harbor clerks reached a tentative contract deal with management at the twin ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach on Tuesday night, settling a week-old labor clash that has idled most of America's biggest cargo-shipping complex.

Believe what you will, guys.

As '700 alluded to (above),....the 8 day STRIKE is OVER.

1. 800 ILWU members (of small Local 63) went on STRIKE.

2. 10,000.."TEN THOUSAND" ILWU men and women REFUSED to CROSS thier(local 63) Picket Line.

3. The 'WEAK SIDE' ..BEG for the Mediator. (ILWU did NOT call them in)

4. N O ....O U T S O U R C I N G ! !

5. ADDED Job Security.

6. Wage and Pension INCREASES.

7. "6" Year deal.

The E P I T O M E of Union SOLIDARITY !

So YES Eric,.......We WILL believe what we Will !
(You 'may' want to stick with Aviation) !

As I said, Bears, believe what you want. Fact is you're a dying breed.

Unions may win the occasional battle, but continue to lose the war.

I know you have heard of union solidarity. I also know I don't need to explain that a large group of union workers exist in and around the gulf coast. They are not like the airline unions.

You just saw a perfect example of union how solidarity can work with the dock workers standing up for the clerical by not crossing the picket line.

You used to be a union rep and here you are dancing on the grave of the fallen like us. We should be cheering a win for the middle class union workers here. Not everyone has to suffer the fate that you and I have.

Too bad the IAM didn't back up AMFA at NW...................."Union Solidarity, Pffft !
How can people like you, stick your chest out and denounce people who don't believe unions have all the answers, when one union doesn't mind throwing the other, under the bus !

Reading comprehension alert.....I'll highlight the pertinant part of the quote

Were any of you aware that this strike was called by a group of clerks who make $190K per year? Their job is to determine which container is heaviest and thus gets loaded first into the belly of the ship. The clerks were claiming the port was outsourcing their jobs. And this is a surprise to who???

The ports @ Los Angeles have a geographical market advantage. They also have a labor disadvantage. Huge disadvantage. Huge.

No they don't.

They make an average base salary of $87k/yr. When you factor in total benefits-including future compensation (ie. pension), it's a big jump, but not as high as you'd like to make it sound (~ $165k)..

Has anybody ever noticed that conservatives tend to believe that everybody (except executives and themselves) are overpaid?

Okay what...they are overpaid at $190k per year, although even in today's down market, my humble 55 year old 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom abode that I am able to afford on a sub $100k per year income would sell for about 1.5 million in California...but that's a lot of money. But here in the midwest, where we can still afford the American dream of said 3 bedroom, 2 bath house (with a big lot) for under $200k, it was determined that $65k was too much to pay a computer programmer. And $35k was too much to pay someone working the help desk. And because Kansas is a right to work state, everybody pretty much went right along and said "Gosh...you're right....that's way too much to pay someone for that job"

The ones who need to watch out are the ones who are working at the whim of what someone else deems to be "too much". It will come for you too. I've seen it...guys with MBA's applying for an accounting clerk position that pays $25k. Because they were overpaid for what they did in their former job. Unions aren't destroying the middle class. Quite the opposite actually.

Good point Dell. The grocery business is but the latest to suffer the same fate as Big Steel, Aviation & Manufacturing in general.

Aviation is actually the one bright spot for the USA. If you are flying on a commercial, business or general aviation aircraft chances are it was built here.

Sure there are companies that are no longer around or shadow of thier former selves. However you would be hard pressed to put the blame on unions.

Take Douglas Aircraft for example. At one time they built almost 90% of the commercial aircraft in the world. Now they no longer exist. The reason has nothing to do with unions and everything to do with poor business decisions. Like not investing in your product line and trying to rehash old ones. That's how you got lemons like the MD-11 and MD-90.
