US 767 Extreme Makeover

It says that Envoy will receive the "portable" IFE's.

Like a Nintendo Playstation, or perhaps something from Atari in an effort to keep costs down?

How can I eat and watch my favorite movie at the same time while sitting in my Envoy seat? I can already see someone trying to balance their Playstation on the armrest and knocking it into the aisle as they cut into their Calzone with their plastic knife and fork. Just as this happens, along comes Louise, working just as fast as she can for a 48-year veteran, and "CRUNCH"!!!!

Will insurance replace an electronic device crushed from the severe pressure of a SAS shoe worn by one of our senior Flight Attendants?

I believe AA has an integrated portable player in their new business seat in the 767.

It is a cost benefit decision since refitting the plane with the equipment for AVOD would be quite high since theoretically the 767 will not be around for much longer.

Besides the DigEplayer (sp?) has a lot of programming in it for such a compact size.

And United's PS service has portables in first..people love them! I know I know, gotta make sure we have something to complain about....

The Envoy seats on the 767 will have a retractable "arm" to hold the portable players so you can put it up to watch, move it to an angle more comfortable for you, and give the passenger complete control over where it will be positioned in front of them, out of their hands, or in their lap, or in their pudgy little fingers. The customer has the choice to see the player any way they want. Just another stupid, not thought-out move from Tempe. 🙄

And, FWIW, the new interiors were designed by a manager who moved from Crystal City, so B&M all you want about how ineffective, stupid, blind, trashy, etc. the HP management is, but those interiors are an East brainchild through and through...

I just hate passing them out and picking them up. We had them for a short time years ago. Of course, I'm sure these newer models are much better than the bulky ones we had then.

I will bet you dinner Barbell that of all the "Cool" or "Great" products or options this one was the CHEAPEST on a short term basis. It's in their DNA, they know the price of everything and the value of NOTHING.

I'm sure the convenience aspect was not even considered. It was all about $$$$$.

I like the portable sets. I used them on Swiss Air First Class from ORD to Zurich and loved it. Should we talk about their service as well or would that just be a rude reminder of how poor you people are competing against the majors?

Shouldn't you be reviewing a spreadsheet? Or, are you shining the Three Kings' shoes?

This seems misleading. In that one paragraph, they refer to 3 classes of service: Coach, Envoy and First. So which is it?? 2 classes or 3?

Secondly, am I to read correctly that the new lie-flat Envoy seats will *NOT* have built in IFE? If so, that's another cheap move. The portable players are cumbersome and don't really offer all the flexibility of a true IFE like the AVOD system on the A330. I hope they put more on board than there are passengers for when there are inevitably broken units.

The leather on the coach seats looks amazingly similar to the leather on the America West aircraft--CHEAP.

I guess Wal Mart was having a sale on leather.

USFan, thanks for posting. Personally if what is posted is actually used it seems to be a big improvement, but I have one question? Why buy seats like that and not have built in IFE, seems like the portable digi players would really cheapin an otherwise big step forward. Also pretty hard to imagine we would actually have the same seat as Emirates !

So where is the attachment for the portable IFE? I only see the one tray, but nothing else.

Looking at the other carriers that are using this seat(or variant of it), they ALL offer built in IFE.

Digi players - I know that MAXJET / AEROFLOT / AIR INDIA / AEROLINEAS ARGENTINAS / LAN CHILE /CSA / LOT / EOS / OASIS HONG KONG AIRLINES even JAL ( on some aircraft )- all of them using Digi players and passengers love them !!! Its cheaper for the airline , more choice for the passengers , convinient if you want to stand up from your seat . Read comments of passengers in SKYTRAX . They are all really happy !!!
I see it as improvment and not as negative thing .
Some lowcost airlines are also use these players for all passengers in all classes for a charge of 7-20 USD per use . Personally I would pay this amount myself as well to be able to see nice quality movie onboard ...
But its only my own thought ....

Though I am NOT a fan of cramming more seats into an aircraft as our new management has done I think the 767 could be reconfigured a bit better. The dry galley between the bathrooms fwd of the overwing exits is virtually useless except for wine/amenity kits and the trash carts. That whole area could be used for center seats if they got rid of it. As for envoy, it seems those seats will take up more area when reclined(even with the feet tucking under the seat in front). I don't see how they will keep envoy on the 767 at 24 and stay within the original area. Can we see it going to 18? Hmmmmm.
