Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato recently told US Airways Chief Executive Officer Bruce Lakefield that he wanted to compete to keep reservations and maintenance work in Pittsburgh. He said Lakefield assured him the county would have a chance to vie for the work and facilities if the airline decides to consolidate elsewhere.

"He said, 'If we get to that point, I will call you guys' and we'll have the opportunity to make our pitch for it," Onorato said. "I have to take him at his word."

Lets see hours before the company exited Bankruptcy they abrogated the leases, they did not approach PIT to renegotiate.

US did PIT dirty.

Could you provide a link that indicates that US asked PIT for anything prior to abrogating the airport lease?

In the absense thereof, you should consider retracting your (incorrect) statement.

And yes, they can afford "not to." US needs PIT much more than PIT needs US.

PIT is also similar now to Continental's CLE operation, Delta's CVG, and so on.

It will make a great 70-110 seat market, moving back to its roots....

Actually I was sitting in the PIT club when Siegel & Chiames were there for meetings with the then Imperial Prince of PIT and his FOUR armed Alleg. Sheriff's security detail. They were there to negotiate and discuss PIT's future PRIOR to emergence from BK. It's not US Airways fault that PIT came to a gunfight armed with a pocket knife.

Really? It's amazing that nobody else (including the county executive himself) remembers that, reported it, or otherwise had any knowledge.

Or, we can take the word of someone who almost fanatically hates Western Pennsylvania and who is key in an organization sympathetic to the regime at CCY at face value on the issue.

Nope. The mistake was spending the money in the early 1990s, but that cannot be undone.

I'm looking, There were IIRC all manner of conversation public & private. I mean think about it. If Siegel did in fact say "we're not touching the leases at PIT", that implies by it's very nature that US had discussions PRIOR to emergence from BK, so IMHO no retraction is required based on that information alone.

You can find, if you look hard enough, many articles to suggest that US verbally and in writing told the county and state that PIT was fine. You cannot find anything that suggests otherwise up until the 11th hour of the first Chapter 11 filing.

Ahh, now a lesson from the A320 book of misdirection. Nobody said anything about the hub. If you would like to go there though, I find it somewhat interesting that since dumping the PIT hub the PHL hub has self destructed in terms of revenue yield and operational stats, and as an extra added bonus US had to enter bankruptcy again.

The line for the CCY sympathy club forms just east and south of Altoona (for future reference).

The Pittsburgh flying is effectively being transferred to Fort Lauderdale where the international yields are expected to be much higher.

In regard to facilities, there are to many and they are to spread out. For example, there were three training facilities with duplicate costs that now have been consolidated into one modern facility in Charlotte, with greater effectiveness with all personnel working under one roof.

The same type of economy of scales and cost reductions are expected to occur in Reservations, Maintenance, RIDC, and Dispatch.

The Commonwealth and the ACAA had their opportunity to covert Pittsburgh into an operation like Delta in Cincinnati, but never offered the funding necessary for US Airways to lower its costs to a competitive level.

Uhh, no. It was dumped because the local citizens were unwilling to subsidize the current crop of losers in CCY.

The Pittsburgh flying is effectively being transferred to Fort Lauderdale where the international yields are expected to be much higher.

Before or after AA moves in and matches fares?

The Commonwealth and the ACAA had their opportunity to covert Pittsburgh into an operation like Delta in Cincinnati, but never offered the funding necessary for US Airways to lower its costs to a competitive level.

And they did the the right thing and said no. US' current leadership has managed to drive the company into bankruptcy court twice inside of two years. It would be a foolish use of taxpayer money to subsidize a losing operation. There are absolutely no signs that US will ever be anything but a losing operation absent dramatic and sweeping changes in middle and upper management, and the county/state recognize this.

I guess you might say that unlike the average ALPA MEC member from LGA or CLT or DCA, the folks in PIT and MDT are unwilling to continue to subsidize a loser out of their pocket and the pocket of those who voted for them

There's alot of should of, could of, would of's with regards to US Airways. And God knows we could go back and forth on the blame game concerning PIT and the FLL debate. I do agree with much that Bob said. The bottom line is PIT is no longer a hub, res will probably close in PIT, PHL's a mess, CLT is growing. and a new mini-hub "focus city" is coming, regardless of those poo-pooing it. This is what we have. Play the cards the way you choose. I am lucky. I am single and knew things were going to get bad and got the heck out of Manhattan. Yes, I was ready to leave, but it took me awhile to get use to CLT and now I really like it here. For those with families or roots in a particular area, I DO feel bad for you. It has taken me years to understand that US Airways owes me nothing, even though I wish they valued us more. It indeed IS a business just like any other. They make decisions...many that we don't like...and that puts all of us in situations that make us uncomfortable. But we do adjust. And all of you in PIT will as well.

For those of you who may come down to CLT, you are welcomed here. I know alot of relistate agents and I myself will be happy to show any one of you around the area. It REALLY isn't that bad. Good luck to all of you up in the "burgh.
