US Airways Still Seeking the Right Deal

I think what these analysts forget about is that every airline right now is losing money except Southwest. US is actually very well capitalized in comparison to the others. US and CO are the only two airlines besides WN that can actually sustain themselves, as long as they slow the bleeding. If capacity isn't reduced by mergers - it will be reduced by bankruptcies. Tempe may not be as retarded as everyone gives them credit for. All they have to do is slow the bleeding, and they may still come out the winner. All things considered, if US loses money at the same pace as all the other airlines, US will outlast the competition...

Parker is the first winner when fuel costs come down next year with his stock buy.

It’s almost like dumb luck that he and his team found themselves running US. With all the stupid decisions, they may still be ahead by this time next year.

Yea US/AS=I don't see it happening. I think a AA or DL/AS Merger would be more likely.

AS has a nice operation that seems to be relatively low cost but still treats passengers well. We flew them to Kauai last December and AS did a good job putting passengers in an island mood with macadamia nuts, POG juice and special cocktails. The return flight was a redeye with no special items.

While Seattle is a gateway to Asia, the AS 737-800's wouldn't offer US any capability beyond Hawaii. After a while even SEA to Hawaii gets a bit claustrophobic on a 737. I don't see any synergies from a merger with US, because they have an all Boeing fleet. If US could convert its own product to be comparable to AS, it would be a definite improvement, but in all likelihood US would just bring AS service down to the US level.

Not trying to start an argument, just a discussion...

AS has extensive code-sharing with us (AA), and, by extension, connection with the rest of OneWorld. What would a combination with LCC give AS and its shareholders that they don't already have?

Are you REALLY trying to impart some common sense into the airline business? Come on now. It's NEVER been a requirement for a merger to make sense. In fact, it seems the opposite. The LESS likely they seem the more likely they are to occur.

AS is having the same "critical mass" problem that LCC has. That ALONE could drive a merger. Financials won't. At least not in todays' environment.

Sorry. I forgot myself for a moment. You are correct. Airline executives do not wish to be confused with facts once their minds are made up. 🙄

Just look at the many, many millions "they" pocket with ANY merger. Now all one needs do is ask the following:
1) What's THIER actual goal?
2) Is anyone naieve enough to even briefly imagine that these types of "people" care about anything other than themselves?
3) How then, could ANY merger be "bad" in such individuals' eyes?..and why should they care?

There are some very rare exceptions...a handful of actual people with vision and concern for employees and others....but they ARE rare..We know who they are precisely because of their extraordinary values and behavior.....but none such appear to be players in the current airline-merger-mania enviornment.

At least it seems.....emphasis on "seems" that DP actually wants to run an airline. Wx that is into the ground or up up and away.....time will tell. I do agree that the CEOs come out smellng like a rose either way. What's wrong with that picture!
From Leslie O Barnes right on through to DP, I don't think there has ever been a "good" CEO.
Bummer. <_<
