Considering i am a FSC in PHL, I'd rather give up pay than jobs since my station would be one of those outsourced. I'm still upset of the outsourcing of overnight cabins in the 2003 contract. During a union meeting I asked the 501 president at the time "Why are we giving up jobs rather than a few % more on our pay, we can always get money back, but never jobs?" His response was "Our driveways cost more than your homes down here in Philly, we just cant give up anymore pay." Nice response don't you think.

You want job security at an airline, transfer to a large station, don't exspect everyone to sacrifice so you can work four or five flights a day.

My excuse "what, are we going to take a pay cut for someone who doesn't even work here anymore"

Thats what happened in 1995.

The company is trying to bank on getting a combination of the top and bottom of the seniority list to ratify these long term concessions. They figure if they throw a few scheckles at the old guys, never letting them know how much the company would pocket off the deal, they get a certain percentage to vote yes, then by saying that the buyouts will mean less layoffs they can get the bottom 4600, even though the number is complet BS. Why do you think they threw out 4600? Thats roughly 46%, so they figured they only needed 4% +1.

My guess is that their counter will include a higher buyout and less layoffs. They just want 50% +1.

I think they fail to realize that when June 6 came and went so did their opportunity to get a ratified agreement that does not bring us up to our peers. The longer this takes the more informed the members become. The next Fear factor show will have even less of an impact. A $75K Early Out probably wont get many more yes votes than the $40K did, if you are ready you are ready, if not then you arent, but on the bottom end, which is where I suspect most of the YES votes came from, the revelation that they didnt even have RFPs for the work, along with Oil dropping to $80/BBL ,and other carriers hiring away mechanics at a rate we havent seen since the late 1980s, (we had around a dozen quit LGA alone since the company filed, I was recently informed of a guy with over 20 years who quit and went to Non-Union Fed Ex) has wiped out the fear factor. More and more know that there is life with or without AA. Now more feel like I do, the worst outcome we could have from this is to agree to stay at the bottom of the industry for another six years.

How can the restructuring in BK be fair now unless all work groups are given percentage equity stake also?

Each group should get an equity stake based on the amount of their givebacks. That's the way they did it in 2003. So AMT's should get more than a FSC based on the individual giveback is less for a FSC. Remember those killer stock options you got? I hope you cashed them in when it was $30 something.

Agreed, like I said, what did UAL get 7 years ago? They got Equity as well. When they went into BK it was on a New Contract that had them at the top of the industry, we are going in 4 years after the amendable date and at the bottom of the industry.

Recently they signed another agreement where they got an $11,000 lump sum and the current agreement becomes amendable next year.

Bob, I am not as confidant as you are. I am a member of good ole Local 514 where the members DON"T WANT TO BE INFORMED. We here at 514 also like being required to take vacation or take off without pay during Christmas week (This is a lockout). We also love to give our pay up so our co-workers can work for OSM wages. We also elected a fleet service clerk as our local president, who has not been seen for quite some time. Our spokesmen at the hall are Rick Mullings (TWU International) and Joe McGill (machinist?) who seems to be more concerned about buying video games for his little boy than destroying pay and benefits for the rest of us. Local 514 is a puppet of Jim Little and rubberstamp anything he proposes. Rest assured that no matter what crap comes out of negotiations, 514 leadership will push it. These snakes in the grass officially took a neutral stance on the "Last Best Offer" but pushed for a yes vote by distributing information designed to scare people into voting yes. Many did and I would guess the majority of Tulsa. They also spread other propoganda that slandered you and took quotes out of context to try to make you look in a bad light. Those of us in Tulsa who choose to be informed are a vast minority. The rest are sheep led by their noses by a local leadership who's only desire is to be appointed to an international position. I fear the longer it takes the more time local 514 can sell another bad deal. They have sold every lousy contract since I have been here (since 85). They have convinced many here that the retirement medical company match will be given to them. In reality, the company match will be used to fund any buy out package. That is my (and all of ours) money!!! We desperately need someone such as yourself in a leadership position here. If that were so I would not be worried.

As an outsider I can only go by what I see from where I am. Disinterest and apathy are not unique to Tulsa and the Tulsa membership no doubt helped to get the last two deals shot down. Apparently there were enough sheep willing to break from the herd. I saw some of the stuff, the News reports, the Chamber of Commerce, the videos from both the Local and the Company , all pushing the yes vote but doing so in such a way as to be able to claim plausible deniability when the guys realize that they just destroyed their professions and was pleased when it was voted down . With the company no longer able to hide their profits and the fact that the sky didnt fall on June 7th I think more and more will no longer be susceptible to the fear tactics, even if the company thinks of new ones. I think they shot their load on that one as far as threat level and credibility. Jim Reams Video pretty much tipped us off to the fact that they didnt have a plan B, we will find out next week. They thought it was going to pass. Dont get fustrated at your coworkers, I've been there, it doesnt help, just keep trying to educate them, sure 9 out of 10 may not want to be bothered but if you get one, then he gets another, and that person gets another, that same herd mentality may kick in and help draw in the straglers.
I think that either way jobs will be eleiminated, especially at the base and while the intentions may be to save people from getting laid off by agreeing to concessions I feel that the group as a whole, and the individuals who may be riffed are better served in the long run by going for this industry pays. I do not believe in lowering pay to save jobs. That said I dont believe in giving away jobs either but if we want both, job scope and industry pay then we have to be willing to strike for it. Some on the Committee have accused me of wanting to strike, a strike is the next to last thing I would want to see, the last thing is a concessionary 6 year deal.

I (and some others) have been trying to educate others, but it is difficult when the local puts out so much misinformation. The only way to actually find out what has been going on is on this board. Local 514 puts out only the minimum information. I am hoping for the best though. We'll see what happens.
