OK, I could understand the comment if it were 15 years ago. The cold war had been going on since the 50's and hey, it was always the USSR. But my god man, they went bye bye 16 years ago. Is it too much to ask for a presidential candidate to at least have the names straight for the major players? This worst than Dukakis in a helmet or whats his faces when he let out that scream.

It's Russia you bone head .... RUSSIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

USSR is alive and well dude....Vladimir Putin is the new Czar if you hadn't noticed.

Guess nobody gave FDR, one of our greatest presidents, the memo either. He often refered to the USSR as Russia. Even though it was not Russia and it's leader at the time was not even a Russian.

Not trying to be a dick and go all Cliff Clavin on you or anything, but Tsar was the title of the Russian leaders before the Bolshevik revolution, pre-1917.
The leader of the USSR was always the "General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union," or the premier. B)

I read a few pieces on line about the history of "Russia" and it seems to me from what I read that it has always been "Russia" but it was only the USSR or the "Soviet Union" from 1917-1991. I saw several references to "Soviet Russia". Not sure if that is accurate or not but it seems to make sense.

Well, technically, Russia was still around in FDR's time, it was just united with the other republics in the USSR.

And I am in a bad mood because my beloved cubbies were swept tonight. We were silent as we left Wrigley, about 30 minutes after the game ended.

The former Soviet Union consisted of fifteen republics. Some of these republics were part of the former Russian Empire. Others like Estonia were forcibly annexed by the Soviet Union in the early forties. Not that it really matters. When FDR said Russia he was talking about the USSR not the Russian SFSR.
