Where should US Airways add for new long distance flight from DCA

2nd flight to PHX.

Jim
Another flight to PHX would be the 4th from DCA for US. Being retired BB, you may not have known that.
Still possible, I guess, but it would be an uninspired choice, IMHO. US has a nonstop to LAS as well.

How about SMF or SJC, to complete the California possibilities?

UNINSPIRED! I love that word. Tempe should remove the "US Airways" wordmark from the top of the HQ building and replace it with: "UN Inspired"
I was going to use chicken----, but thought better of it.

US already flies to Tweed! Thought you knew everything.

So what about DCA-LGB? IIRC old HP had more then a few flights out of there, don't know it the were M/L or Express.

Oh good thought! DCA - LGB
how about DCA - Hollywood?????? If DCA LAX is already taken.... then the stars that are in bed w/ congress can go back and forth!

Jim, I thought they added a 2nd flight post merger?? If not I'm thinking you're right.
No, it appears you're right. In fact, it looks like currently there are 3, and given the flying time and DCA curfew that eats up the day. I guess they could squeeze a 4th in there if traffic would support it, but I have no idea if there's that much traffic.

I've flown that DCA-PHX flight many times. While LF is not necessary indicative of profit, I've more often than not seen many seats go empty. I really hope US doesn't add a 4th PHX flight. My money is on LAX or SFO, for Star connection purposes.

I don't know what your idea of "many seats" is, but my experience is the exact opposite. In fact, without any inside knowledge of LF stats, I'd bet that the DCA-PHX route has one of the top LFs in the US system.

Star Alliance certainly is the wild card in all of this and another PHX does nothing to improve that opportunity. Assuming for discussion purposes that Tempre feels there is enough lift for Star Alliance would PDX work? I knew they do a PHL-PDX that seems to work

AS has asked for PDX as well as SAN, although with the limited number of slots available I'm not sure anyone will get two routes.

Southwest just filed for DCA-AUS. JetBlue also has filed for DCA-AUS and DCA-SJU. Virgin has filed for two daily frequencies for DCA-SFO. Added to UA's one daily, I am not as sure about US going with SFO.

About 2/3 of the middle seats empty. I've flown DCA-PHX probably 150 times since the merger. Rarely have I ever seen a full flight -- usually fly DCA-PHX Monday evenings and PHX-DCA Thursday or Friday afternoons. Again, though, LF is not indicative of profit. Also remember what I'm saying is anecdotal, not scientific. The only people who know the profitability are those in Tempe.

I'd be shocked if the route wasn't profitable. But I've never seen "light" loads as you describe. My bad luck I guess.

Back in the old AWA days PHX DCA was one of the higher yielding routes with not very good LF. We had CMH to DCA flights and that was always a good way to get back home to PHX when everything else was full.

Looks like the winner is dca-san... effective 4 jun.....using 320 and 319 aircraft.
