Which Airport For Wine?

Thinking about non-reving this weekend to pick-up some vino. Germany and Italy come to mind. For those of you who have been to those airports, does one have to leave the airport or can it be purchased there locally at the airport? Flying time from Philly to either? Assuming 8-9 hours, not sure.

Thanks,

Keep in mind there are limits to how much alcohol you can bring into the country (I believe it's four litres). You want to check that out before you go.

Are you going just for wine? If so, you might want to just spend the money you'd pay on taxes for a couple nice bottles you could buy here and stay at home. If you want to go somewhere overseas anyway and are just going to get some wine while there, MAD would be a good choice. Cheap wine, the taxes are under $30 and you can either get it at duty free, or take the metro into the city for about $3 roundtrip and buy decent wine on the cheap in any of the little neighborhood shops. Got a good bottle for about 4 Euros there. Just did a cruise there recently and picked up a couple at El Corte Ingles. Good selection starting at about 1 Euro for the "generic store brand" of table wine. Did try that one though!

my, my, my. Aren't we quick to judge? And, no, I am not a mainline captain, nor a pilot. <_<
Were I, do you think I would have asked about the airports? <_<
Nonetheless, thanks for those of you who responded positively. I will do some research before jumping the pond.

The only bargain I've ever seen at an airport is a plane ticket. That includes the duty-free shops.

I'm a bit of a wine fan and have never found any real wine bargains (or even reasonably priced ones) in an airport shop. I'd suggest doing some research based on the type of wine you like and match that up with a major airport near an area that does a nice job for that wine.

Don't worry about the duty. I have brought back from overseas as much as two cases of wine without paying any duty. As someone else noted, you have an allowance of 4 liters. After that, the duty is ~15 cents per 750ml bottle. In a case like this, where the paperwork cost is higher than the duty, US Customs will waive the duty. Be aware, it can sometimes take them 30 minutes to decide that it's not worth their time.

As to those that would disdain screw caps, remember New Zealand is making some great wines including some of the best Sauvignon Blancs, Gewurtraminers and Reislings in the world. About 80% of their wines are capped with screw tops.
