Hey guys (and gals)..I'm a US employee (CLT) customer service and I was just wondering what computer system you folks use. We have Sabre and have been using it for several years now. It was tough learning it at first but I really like it now and think it does a real good job...at least for the gate check-in process.

Formatman:

HP uses AAI for their reservations system.
If AAI is less expensive than SABRE, it may
be beneficial for US to reject the SABRE contract
prior to exiting BK.

AAI seems to work well with HP's web site,
while SABRE has a number of connectivity
issues with US web site. We'll just have to
wait until the ink is dry on the BK exit
before we know who will be the chosen
GDS.

Hey, Thanks SpinDoc for the info. I'm not opposed to learning something new...I'm sure that the "powers-that-be" will make the right decision when the time comes!

We do use System One (SHARES), we have a windows shell called QIK that runs the system one commands without all of the typing. Its very easy to use.

I'm a retired US employee (interested in what's taking place.) Sorry formatman, I have to disagree with you on Sabre. It's a nightmare. Seems that those who wrote the programs (baggage, ops, customer service, fleet service, air cargo, etc) DID NOT converse with each other. 50 different ways to TRY to access info. Must go to RES partition looking for it....not there. Go to DECS...found some info, but seems like there is more. Try FRT partition....oh, there it is! Sabre (at least US's version) leaves much to be desired from this old persons prespective.

If a codeshare comes about quickly, which I think it will, will both airlines need to be with the same res system? Just wondering............

No they do not have to be on the same system for a codeshare. I do have to say that SABRE is nightmare. Using QIK is so easy and cuts down on all of those long scripts. For example, you can adjust an etkt in under 4 key strokes. F9 was on SHARES, but switched over to SABRE II and they hate it. It is not very user friendly and does not have half the resources that QIK/SHARES does.

Although U is part owner of SABRE, so who knows what will happen.....

Any idea about the "under wing" systems that run the operations? Any commonality there?

Which brings up the question that if the new US Airways does go with Qik, can they sell their part of Sabre and get some more cash for the airline?

No, they're not.

Qik is middleware. It works with Sabre -- AA had Qik in the res offices for years. US just never spent the money on middleware.

That's not true. US Airways used Qik (renamed CARE) in Reservations even in the PACER days. With the groovy 16 key aux keypad....

Qik is middleware, and US doesn't own any part of Sabre.

Are you saying that US is using Qik to use on top of Sabre? If so, I stand corrected. If not, then they didn't may to upgrade the middleware when they converted to Sabre.

Yes, they are still using Qik or CARE in Res. They just converted it to use Sabre commands rather than Pacer in 1998. It's not used "on top" but rather the Qik itself passes Sabre commands via an API.

I don't think that Qik was ever implemented at the gates and counters beacuse there are many different things that a gate agent does that are outside of the core reservation functions. If you had a RES Qik shell and a certain LINATA did not have the correct permissions to do that function what would happen? There are 1000's of different permission combinations. Besides, Sabreview is on just about every PC out there and almost everyone knows how to do the basic functions. Ask a mechanic how to list a non rev or pull up a schedule and watch how fast they answer, it's easy stuff once you learn it.

For the trivia people out there - Qik was originally developed in house by Quantas Airlines.

One thing to keep in mind was all the programming US had to do for the Star Alliance. If a combined HP-US is staying in Star, I have a feeling the combined company will use Sabre to avoid all the reprogramming that would be required. Also, Star is developing a common system for all of them to use, so I would think the combined company will migrate to that when it is complete.
