If you look at the developed world, such as Canada, large parts of Europe, Australia, New Zealand etc. then the U.S. is behind in tolerance of one's gender, sexual orientation etc. Yes there are parts of the world that are harsher than the U.S. - the middle east theocracies come to mind... then again the U.S. certainly comes across as one as well.

The information I found was that about 10% of the US population as of 2006 were immigrants. In some European countries, the ratio was between 8% to 20% depending on the country. The trend seems to be that they leave the poorer countries to migrate the richer ones.

The numbers are not what matter, it's the percentage of the population.

My point is this: Mapleleaf says that Canadia is more tolerant of minorities than the U.S. OK, that's nice, but it's much easier to point fingers at us from the great white north where you can easily tolerate people who pretty much don't exist there.

It's a very fair comparison. You did not specify Western Europe or other "civilized" countries, your exact words were The rest of the world seems to be far less concerned with race. gender and sex than the US. Rwanda fits into the category. As does the former Yugoslavia, which is right next door to Western Europe. The point I was trying to make was that in a lot of the world people kill one another over race and ethnicity.

Here's another point I would like to make. Despite what some people may think the glass ceiling is alive and well in Western Europe. Compare these American companies to their Western European counterparts. How many women do you see. Or for that matter people of non-european background.

You are SO right! We have been dealing with it BEFORE even the birth of the nation, therefore, we were forced to deal with this great idea (melting pot of humanity) of the Romans (who NEVER believed in or even thought of "color" in terms of people) more so than the rest of the world.

ALL of us carry some kind of ignorant baggage that we've been fed while growing up, via TV, Culture, family, or community. It is up to each and every one of us to unlearn the damaging part and to learn how to treat every human being based on their character.

America is not perfect by a long shot...but at least we try to face our short comings. The more we talk about race and confront it, the better off we will be as a nation. I personally believe in one term...AMERICAN, not German-American, African-American, Chinese-American. If you are from here/immigrated here, live here, carry a US passport, vote, you are simply an American in my book, I'm not interested in all that "other" BS.

Some day the entire country will view race as as silly crutch of the 19th century, used to control people for profit.
