Here's a tip -- when you initiate a transmission to ATC there is no need to tell the controller that you are "with you". He knows that because he hears you talking to him. It's redundant. Especially amatuerish when the "you" part is emphasized. Amazing to hear from such experienced pilots. Try dropping it. It's just a bad silly habit.

First of all…it’s a personal style or technique issue to “check onâ€￾ using this phrase. There is NO problem what-so-ever doing it. Controllers have their personal preferences too. Have you ever heard the Washington Center controller who sends you to the next sector and says, “Happy Landingsâ€￾? Is this amateurish too? No.

You can be professional, crisp, and clear on the radio and still leave a little room for personality. My 2 cents.

Agreed, adding a little personality isn't a bad thing. Just please refrain from getting too far off of the ICAO phraseology in deep dark Africa or Europe. It tends to confuse and/or piss em off.

I swear this is the truth. I actually had a pilot at an uncontrolled airport respond to me when asked his position, with " I'm on downwind no factor...good Buddy "

When you guys 'check-in' on a new frequency, believe it or not, it is not necessary to tell the controller that you are "with him". It is very redundant and a waste of radio time to inform the controller that you are "with him" since he already and automaticly knows that fact by the very fact that you are speaking to him. Even worse is the "checking in with you". Sounds more like a student pilot instead of an airline pilot when you say that. While we're at it, can we please drop "any chance" and go back to the more specific phrase of "requesting". This ain't Las Vegas.
