Airbus A330-323X US701 from FRA to PHL 11/7/2012 (N276AY) Emergency Landing - Over 1 hour into the flight the plane turned back making an Emergency Landing at Frankfurt.

A source at the airport said "the plane turned back in time because there was potential for a fire..."

I think being over an hour west of FRA would put them closer to many other alternate airports in Europe. To go all the way back to FRA leads me to believe this wasn't "that much" of an emergency...

I wonder what that means, exactly. There is ALWAYS a potential for a fire, since the airplane is not fireproof.

If there was some situation that made fire imminent and/or likely, the airplane would not have flown all the way back to FRA past other adequate airports.

Looks like the cabin crew is deadheading back to PHL today. I guess the cockpit crew stayed to babysit the airplane until it is well enough to fly. Since the cabin crew was released to return home, it sounds like it will be an empty ferry flight back.

AvHerald finally has an entry for this flight. Bleed air leak on climbout, turned around and landed safely. Not much of a fire risk or else they would have landed ASAP, as others have pointed out.

I was on a flight many years ago that diverted with a similar problem. I checked with the crew later and they mentioned that fire is the fear when air is leaking internally.

I remember a 76 that had a leak and was surprised by how much damage it did.
