I was just watching the Galveston Police having to rescue 8 idiots who decided to ignore the evacuation order issued by the Galveston mayor yesterday. It had gotten so bad already that some of them came up the street on jetskis--up the street!

In Colorado, they do not deny your "god-given 'right' as a free-born Amurrican" to ski wherever you want to ski. However, if you ski or hike outside designated safe skiing boundaries and your fanny has to be rescued, you have to pay the state of Colorado for the rescue. I think it may also entail a fine. It's called the Skier Responsibility Law.

The states along the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Coast that are possible targets for hurricanes should have similar laws. You can stay in your home if you wish and ignore an evacuation order. However, if you have to be rescued later, you have to pay the cost of that rescue--all salaries, equipment, and supplies.

I agree with you somewhat. The problem is that some people simply cannot afford to pay for the fuel to get out. They cannot afford a hotel.

With that said, if transportation and shelter is provided for all covered by a mandatory evacuation order, and they choose to ignore it, I think they should have to pay for that rescue cost.

I saw a new story locally of some woman who lived in Clear Lake, and she was flaunting to the reporter, her party supplies. Her friends were already arriving. She had this set up in her garage. She was within 500 yards of the bay...

Right now, she must have at least 2 feet of water in her "party garage", and the storm is still 6 hours away.

Sometimes you just can't fix stupid.
