Here's a novel idea - using the -170's (or CRJ-701's) to replace higher unit cost 50 seaters.

July 7, 2004

Regional carrier Republic Airways on Wednesday said it had agreed to fly more 70 seat aircraft and fewer 50 seaters under a code-share deal with United Airlines.

Republic plans to operate up to 23 70 seat Embraer ERJ-170 aircraft for United, beginning in October 2004, up from 16 previously, while reducing its planned fleet of 50 seat ERJ-145s to nine from 16.

A delay in certification for Republic's new operating subsidiary, Republic Airlines, pushed back the start of the United deal from August, the Indianapolis-based carrier said, adding that it will switch the service to its Chautauqua Airlines subsidiary in the meantime.

Republic officials said the delay would have no material effect on its operations.

The carrier, which went public in May, also has code-share deals with Delta Air Lines, US Airways and American Airlines.
