What's new

AA JFK Termianl

The new terminal is nice in that it is big and new however it is already looking shabby. Anyone else notice all the wallpaper ripped in the tunnel?

I went through the tunnel today. It now has flat screen monitors advertising the new Microsoft Vista system. In fact, all the walls are covered with the Vista logo and banners are hanging from the roof.

Anyone have any idea which flights will be going out of "B" and what is going out of "C"?

Thanks

AA is spending over $1B on a terminal that will have far fewer gates than B6 will build for 25% less.

AA can't afford to add flights at JFK. Becoming a landlord is the only option - and even then the rents for other carriers will be much higher than in other terminals at JFK.

I recall reading in all the local NY papers that the Port Authority is helping B6 out with the building costs. PA fronts the money in return for a long term lease with pay back of the building costs built in.

I don't recall anyone lending AA any money or offering any deals like this.

IIRC, the way it's described in the paper is how it works for all capital projects at Port Authority facilities, and how it works for most terminal construction projects. The airport issues the bonds for construction of the building shell and essential infrastructure, and the airline pays that back thru rent.

The airline does wind up carrying the expense for finishing out the shell (signage, customising back office configurations, lounge seating, FIDS, podiums, jetways), and that's probably where Jetblue will manage to save their 25% and then some. AA has expensive tastes, whereas Jetblue intentionally lives on a shoestring budget.

Also, Jetblue's terminal will have more gates in a smaller footprint simply because it's an all-narrowbody terminal, where most of AA's gates are designed for widebodies, and all are capable of handling a 757. So, Jetblue's smaller footprint should naturally come at a lower cost.

The danger in that approach is that they'll wind up remodeling it a few years down the line if they ever introduce an aircraft larger than the A321.

I'm not so sure about that being more than a myth. NYC as a whole only accounts for around 6% of AA's daily departures, and yields on the transcons and Caribbean have sucked wind since Jetblue and p.s. started up.

When I worked my last budget, the terminal rent for JFK exceeded the terminal rent for terminal rent DFW -including- D. The sooner it is finished and can start being used to ground handle other carriers, the better.

Just for gits and shiggles, here's departures/day as a percentage for stations with more than 1% of mainline system departures. Everyone else is below that:

Code:
DFW	19.0
ORD	9.1
MIA	8.2
LAX	4.0
LGA	3.2
JFK	2.3
STL	2.3
SJU	1.9
BOS	1.9
MCO	1.7
DCA	1.5
AUS	1.4
SFO	1.4
TPA	1.3
DEN	1.3
SAT	1.2
PHL	1.1

Add EWR in with JFK/LGA, and you've got a very small in distance, focus area, that "outshines" any non-hub.

Give me a _UCKING break, WT.

Just because DL is flying to "world renouned" places like "leictenstein", or bucharest, from JFK does'nt mean #### !!

DL may claim more International flights from JFK, AA IS the "class" out of Kennedy.

What AA needs , is a new A/C to go with the Taj Mahal.

Sooner or later, sooner I believe, boeing/airbus will come out with a bird, that can go JFK/SYD. By then, AA will have the china routes it needs, and will be able to offer award winning service, at top dollar, from JFK, to places like(non-stop jumbo's) to China/Japan/Australia/Africa..South Africa(OF COURSE LHR)(EAT your hearts out EVERYBODY, over the JFK/LHR run).
Because CO is successful across the river in EWR, do you really feel AA could'nt, out of Kennedy, PLUS being a Trump style landlord at JFK.

I'll be the first to admit, that AA could do More out of JFK, but again, I really think that 1. they're waiting for the terminal to be finished 100%, then "match" an A/C to best utilize "it", for the really long haul stuff.

JFK IS america's real Airport, and AA goes from JFK to most of the "champagne" places.

(And if AA and BA EVER hook up, well "the rest is history, and EVERYONE KNOWS IT)

ps,
then of course, there's the NAME painted across the fuselage......"A M E R I CA N"
(I rest my case)

How is the terminal coming along? Anyone have any pics? Any sort of timeline till it is finished?

I walk through it every night after work, the place is an ongoing construction site, repairs on recently completed areas, and additions everywhere. There is shabbiness in the quality of work by contractors, and visible low grade materials used, with little supervision being done by AA.

The place is a financial sink hole. A blue ribbon panel of experts should be convened, into why it's falling apart already.

Smells of broad kick-backs.

Just the other day, in what was a colder than usual day, a water pipe bust open spewing thousands of gallons of water onto computers and offices.

One walk through T-4 at JFK and you can see the difference, and T-4 was completed years earlier.

JFK TWA T-5 ( parts remaining ) is in my opinion , the best in airport construction, the tile work alone, is near Vatican status.

Who gives a rat's ass about who's terminal is better.

Must be from the mid-west, where a terminal consists of a chalk-board, a wooden bench and a bucket for a toilet.
Damn that was harsh....but I agree with you about the TWA flight center. As an architecture buff, I always got goose bumps walking through it to my trip.

I was in aa/jfk. It was fine easy, comfortable. it did seem to be half-finished, literally.. in that one half was finished and one half didn't exist.

If you knew anything, you would now that I am JFK based.

My response was to point out "who would care about a shiny new terminal" when the employees continually take in the shorts while the executives are the ones who get the rewards!

This "my terminal is better than your terminal" debate is assine when you consider the cost of the new terminal as opposed to what the employees sacrificed AND what the executives are getting..

So, yes, WHO GIVES A RAT'S ASS ABOUT A NEW TERMINAL!

It's taken far too long and cost far too much money to build*, but I'm still impressed that when it's finished, two terminals will have been demolished and a new gigantic terminal will have been constructed in their place without completely shutting down AA's JFK operation.

*Even so, I think it will have taken less time to build that AA's new MIA terminal. B)
