Is that because the bellies are too full with bags from all these loaded planes or is it because a lack of manpower due to the recent RIF?
There are several reasons, most of which can't be explained by our friendly management vs. union debate, but I'll try to shead some light on the subject.
1. Predicting how much mail the USPS will give AA is extremely difficult. Result: DFW spent most of '04 either greatly overstaffed or understaffed in regards to mail. By the end of '04 DFW was see a rapid increase in mail volumes, since no one knows when the volumes are going to disapear, no one wants to hire (and then potentially layoff) a bunch of clerks. Thus performance suffers.
2. The planes, on certain routes, are full, so the mail sits. Overtimes, there is just too much of it to load in a short period of time, thus, the mail gets loaded, but not all of it gets scanned, if it doesn't get scanned, we don't get paid, whether it gets to the right place or not.
3. Before you start banging the headcount drum, the rate we are paid for delivering the mail, is profitable if its something that a clerk does during down time. If you started adding a lot of headcount, mail would quickly become unprofitable, thus forcing more layoffs.
4. There is some managment territorial issues that are causing problems, between the ramp and cargo.
5. The technology of mail scanners is somewhat new to the guys on the ramp and as time goes own, with proper training, they will improve performance, thus increasing mail volume alloted to AA.
