Above & Beyond Winners

Here are the rules........seesm fair to me but I am reasonable.

****************************************************
Every quarter we hold our Above and Beyond (A&B) drawing
and award more than $262,000 to employees who have
submitted A&B coupons. The process tends to raise some
questions, so here’s how it all works.
How Do We Select the Winners? The process we use to
determine the 360 winners is a bit lengthy but straightforward.
We receive on average more than 10,000 coupons per quarter.
When we receive a coupon we enter it into the A&B database
and each entry is designated to a selected “bucket†based on
the nominated employee’s workgroup (i.e. ACS bucket, Fleet
bucket, InFlight bucket, Maintenance bucket, etc.). For the
2009 program, there are nine buckets in total. Each bucket
receives a predetermined number of winners. We do this to
ensure that all workgroups are represented and every entry has
the same opportunity to win.
There are 360 possible prizes, 10 - $10,000; 100 - $1,000; and
250 - $250.
The 360 winners are broken down in the following manner
and we expect to use this formula for all of 2009. The number
of winners assigned to each bucket was determined by the HR
Programs team based on an analysis of the average number
of coupons received per bucket and the population of that
respective workgroup using the historical data available since
the program’s inception. Again, we do this to ensure that
coupon recipients from every workgroup (even smaller ones)
have a fair shot at winning.
The winners for each workgroup bucket are selected using a
computer program that randomly selects the winners from the
total entries received. All coupons are included in the computer
selection process, so the more coupons you submit the better
your chances are of making it into your workgroup’s bucket of
winners. However, at no time can a person be selected more
than once. The final 360 winning coupons are then printed,
going into the random drawing that CEO Doug Parker does
for the $10K winners at the State of the Airline address. The
remaining winning amounts are determined randomly by the
HR Programs staff (by drawing the remaining coupons out of
the drum), also at the State of the Airline address monitored by
Managing Director, HR Operations, Alison Smith.
Why were there so many winners from PHX? Out of the
12,000 coupons we received for Q109, about 30 percent were
from PHX-based employees representing various workgroups
— which is about normal. In other words, coupons were
received from more than 3,000 employees in the PHX area
that were then assigned to the numerous buckets that represent
their respective workgroups. In reviewing the data, PHX-based
employees won about 30 percent of the prizes proportionately.
Ultimately it comes down to the luck of the draw for the higher
dollar amounts and this quarter, PHX did well.
As you can see the process is random. First with the computergenerated
selection of the 360 winners, then by Doug and
the HR Programs team pulling coupons out of the drum to
determine the actual dollar amounts each of the 360 winners
will receive.
This process still sounds unfair because PHX managers are
submitting coupons for their folks and shouldn’t this really
be about the customers recognizing employees rather than
managers doing it?
The majority of coupons we receive come from customers. In
fact, in our Q1 drawing last week, more than 75 percent of the
coupons came from customers. At the end of the day it really
does come down to the luck of the draw, but our intent is to
make the process as fair as possible for all of our employees
that go above and beyond the call of duty – whether they
directly interact with customers or help us run a great airline
from behind the scenes. Finally, it is important to note that
every manager in the company has access to and is encouraged
to use A&B recognition coupons – not just PHX managers.

A&B Selection Process

So with the current program in order to win the 10K, you have to win two drawings...

First the drawing that takes all 12,000 or so entries received of which there are only 360 winners - giving you a 3% chance of winning the first drawing.

Then if you were lucky enough to win the first drawing you go into the second drawing were you will have a 2.78% chance of winning $10k, a 27.78% chance of winning $1k, and a 69.44% chance of winning $250.

So turning in one A&B you have a .083 chance of winning both of the drawings needed to get the $10k.

Personally I would like the program to go back to how it was before the merger - 10 A&B's give you two positive space tickets anywhere we flew.

10 A&B's for either two positive space tickets or an .83 chance to win ten grand... which would you go above and beyond for?

I will not reveal my sourse, nor will I say which res center this happens in but---I understand if a supervisor gets a hold of the AB certificate and they have a problem with the agent--abet it personal or just because they might be coaching the agent on something--they tell the agent--you know, I have this AB certificate that I haven't sent in yet----I hope it doesn't get lost.
All AB awards should be mailed directly to the agent at the center and the agent then should turn them in. This has been happening way too much--it even happened when I was working--though not to me.

Ok. I am still a tad confused. Would an analyst fall under management/misc.? And if so, going by the flow chart presented, has 12 slots of chances to win. Well, 12 analysts DID win (12 out of 12) and one of the prizes. Winning the 10 grand.
To manually have to enter all of the available entries involves human hands, which has an effect on randomness. Then to come up to the "360" number involves more of that pesky human intervention. The list goes on. I'm not sure what the answer is but knowing I really have a fair chance of winning would be nice.

If the A&B awards are designed for incentive to employees.....how about this idea?

If the company reaches the goals set for executive incentive pay, then the names of the all the eligible executives goes into a drawing. (ie. Kirby, Isom , etc.)

A drawing occurs and only one executive will receive their bonus and the collective amount of the remaining bonuses gets distributed among the employees. who played a big part in reaching the goals anyway. Kind of similar to the A&B awards program now isn't it? Luck of the draw.

Example
Total Incentive compensation to the top 5 executives as reported to the SEC = $3.4 M (I'm sure there is a lot more to other executives but not required to be reported to the SEC)
Lets say Isom wins the drawing and receives his $450,000
The remaining $3M gets divided up between the 33,000 employees = $90 per employee. Not a big amount but its something.

The top 5 executives reported to the SEC would still recieve over $8M in stock awards, stock options and other compensation as stated in the proxy filing.

Hello. Well it's NO secret. When I was a former Westie you would wonder how junior would get those CUN turns or Hawaii's. What people do is the following:

Let's say I have been with the company 10-13 years... I get a lot of A&B cards from customers because people request them or they just get them. When I have 5-6 or more I go to someone with a lot more seniority (I'll spare the names) and then I give them my packet of A&B cards and I can can get one of their transcon turns, CUN, MEX, or Hawaii's.

So then there you have a magically senior A&B winner. They trade their trips for the cards so they can win. tada!
