Additional widebody aircraft

I agree that a rumour that AA is on the verge of buying 25 to 30 777s sounds very unlikely. Very unlikely.

Apparently, there are airliners.net threads on this subject and a frequent airliners.net participant has posted the rumours to Flyertalk, which has those folks in a tizzy.

Couild this be the same person (without even looking) who said that AA would be adding a bunch of 757 routes from JFK-Europe this year and who has continually been pushing the MIA-NRT route idea?

Even a broken clock is right twice a day, so as long as he keeps saying something will happen, once in a while he'll be right. 😉

except that it defies that the reason AA is not growing is because it has labor cost issues and they won't grow until those issues are resolved.

I know that alot of AA people would like to see the airline return to a growth mode - but it is also obvious that the way AA is growing right now is through alliances.

In time, AA WILL resolve these issues and grow. The only obstacle that will impact AA is that is behind the growth curve of its network peers and will continue to fall behind until its cost issues are resolved.
It is very possible that AA's cost difference relative to its peers might improve as the UA/CO merger progresses and as DL passes out pay raises as part of the final phase of merger integration.... but given that DL's cost advantage over AA is about 20% right now, it is highly unlikely that AA will improve to cost parity anytime soon. It is far more possible that UA/CO will have to increase their costs substantially in order to integrate the merger but it is also possible that UA might settle for the US model which keeps two separate airlines instead of offering substantial pay raises.
Either way, unless APA leadership goes for an incremental growth strategy and AA is willing to do that without addressing the cost disadvantage of the rest of the APA contract, then AA will not grow... and all of the predictions about massive growth continue to be mere rumors.

And again, AA has committed to a contract for new 787s... the chance of a massive order for 777s is very slim... AA's primary focus is on getting the pilots to provide a contract that will allow AA to contract the 787 contract to firm orders.

Points taken on labor costs and viable contracts before the 787 shows up. But that program is woefully delayed, and I see it as more of a 763 replacement than anything else. AA will still need a large widebody, so I wouldn't rule out seeing a few orphans show up.

Look at it as a 763/A300 replacement!

Except that the 789 (which AA has ordered tentatively) is a 772ER replacement more than a 763... and yes, it is delayed but I would bet that AA's slots are closer to the contract because they were ordered after the delays began.

It still is possible that AA could order a few more 777s until the 789s arrive but the 789 really will obsolete the 772ER so the parts of this rumor that make the most sense are to buy used 773s - but even that is contrary to AA's practice of typically not having uncommon fleets or buying used aircraft, esp. international a/c.

I will be as interestred as anyone if AA actually orders some new aircraft but other than changing options to order on a few 772s - or potentially converting 772ERs to 773ERs (which will not be made obsolete by the 772ER), I still see AA most likely to push for a new pilot contract that will allow them to convert the 789s to firm order.

@the pace contract negotiations are going it will be 2025 before the 787 are converted to firm order.

Gloria just talk to the MRS, and she said Tony went to NYC early last week and he just got back today.

Tony was in NYC with some other AMR people talking with CIT, about leasing 38 firm Boeing 737-800 and 7 options that CIT place with Boeing a few days ago, the firm orders are due 2012 to 2015 with the options due 2015 to 2017 time frame, if CIT pickup the option order.

The MRS asks's Gloria, How did Tony like the 9 inches of snow and ice, Gloria said he didn't, you no he doesn't like snow, but their limo driver AJ did not mind it, so they nickname him Action Jackson which he said was nice.

It looks like AA maybe getting prepared for the fuel spike comming in spring of 2013 as some analysis sugguest. I would say to unload some more MD-80's.

But nothing about widebody aircraft.

9:02:17 AM SEATTLE , Jan. 19, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA) and American Airlines today announced the Fort Worth, Texas -based carrier has exercised options for two 777-300ERs (extended range).

But nothing about widebody aircraft.

From Today's Special Jetwire:

Reflecting our growing confidence in the strength of our global network, and our oneworld partnership, this morning we announced the purchase of two Boeing 777-300 aircraft, to be delivered in late 2012. The airplanes are bigger than our current 777s, with a longer range that will enable us to provide nonstop service to places we can’t reach today.

Well, I was wrong. I never imagined that AA would buy another 747-sized widebody, but here AA has ordered a pair of them. Two? Just two? That's enough airplane for one really long-haul route. Strange.
