Victory for NWA Flight Attendants for AFA-CWA
AFL-CIO Issues "Interference Decision" Against the Transport Workers Union (TWU)
In a three (3) page decision issued today by President, John Sweeney, the AFL-CIO issued a ruling against the Transport Workers Union (TWU) for their failure to comply with an earlier decision by the federation which granted the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA exclusive organizing rights in the goal of welcoming NWA flight attendants back under the protective umbrella of the AFL-CIO.
Earlier this month, AFA-CWA had filed a "non-compliance" complaint against the TWU when they announced they had entered into a merger agreement with the PFAA. Upon reviewing the evidence and testimony provided at the non-compliance hearing held last week, the AFL-CIO has ruled that "TWU's efforts to affiliate PFAA, and PFAA's activities in connection with the affiliation, will inevitably lead to interference" in the upcoming NMB election process.
The AFL-CIO has determined that in order to come into compliance with Article XXI, TWU must take the following actions:
1. Cease any and all efforts to affiliate PFAA;
2. Cease any financial or other assistance to PFAA; and
3. Issue a public statement supporting AFA-CWA in the upcoming NMB election.
The AFL-CIO subcommittee will retain jurisdiction over this matter and the TWU must advise the AFL-CIO within five (5) days what steps they have taken to come into compliance with this decision.
Northwest flight attendants for AFA-CWA were very pleased to hear today of the AFL-CIO's ruling. After learning of today's ruling, Northwest flight attendant Susan Squiers, who is based in Minneapolis stated "AFL-CIO President John Sweeney is to be commended for honoring his commitment to stand behind our flight attendants during these difficult times. Today's decision helps alleviate some of the confusion and division that has escalated among our flying partners".
