How could a probable ATC separation error be caused by safety issues at Northwest? I guess it's possible (even though the NWA DC-9 did have a fully maintained and functioning TCAS system that alerted them of the nearby aircraft) I think you may be stretching the incident in order to attribute bad things to NWA.
Aren't there enough facts to use without fabricating associations?
By the way, welcome to the forums!
I haven't read much on the incident but as to your first question about linking an ATC seperation error and safety, it could easily happen. Are NWA DC-9 RVSM compliant? If they are, and a repair(faulty) was made in a RVSM critical area you may have induced altimeter/airspeed error which could lead to a seperation error.
BTW you could ask the same questions about the SWA B737. I'm sure the forthcoming report will tell all. Prehaps its not maintenance related, we'll see.
