American Airlines and Labor Negotiations

There are many types of relationships you could have with management and they're usually consistant with the abilities of the elected representatives.

A good relationship isn't always good if that's the only way to get things done or get people brought back.

if you are the mia president..

have you been able to bring more people back on a technicality or due to your relationship with the station manager?

if i was president, i know that winning that technicality would make me look like johnnie cochran/perry mason...but, i'd think you'd still need to have a good relationship with the station manager.

WeAAZ, let me be clear....I truly don’t care anymore about these job functions anymore. My point it the TWU is doing this big dog and pony show about offshoring work and trying to educate the public about it But they were never interested in protecting
mechanics jobs WHATEVER those jobs were. Now the big concern is the hangar in Brazil. I personally do not think of that as OFFSHORING work. They are American Airlines employees. Just like LHR AND CDG and NRT. As well as some Caribbean cities we fly to. At one point in my life I cared about it. But now there are more important things to worry about. i dont blame fleet or automotive for taking the work. I blame the TWU for going along with it so willingly.

Don't believe it had anything to do specifically with 512, but the change was pressed uniformly and the decision to cover someone was taken out of local management's hands. Those types of deals are hard to come by in the Fleet world.

hmmm...so, the baker letter came out the very day doyle and his group were to take office?

i don't believe that rod and his group were negatively affected by the letter.

it's not an issue to lose sleep over, i only wondered if the company enforced this uniformly or not. you're saying they did..ok.

WHY DID 102 HOUSE DEMOCRATS VOTE FOR NAFTA?

WHY DID 27 SENATE DEMOCRATS VOTE FOR NAFTA?

If those are your numbers then a lot more republicans voted for it. I am not saying Democrats are perfect and never make mistakes. I am not perfect and I make mistakes. I am saying that history has shown, and our union leaders will say, that Democrats are much more friendly to organized labor than republicans are. When was the last time you heard of a Democratic governor trying to bust unions like republicans did in WI and OH?

yes, sean is no slouch.

i'm not suggesting that shenanigans were going on in ord or other cities. i wouldn't know anyways.

i do know that the former station manager decided that since he has to work with the twu, he might as well have a very good relationship with the local president, and this he did have with rodriguez. no shame either way. rodriguez was my crew chief between terms..rodriguez was a smart wheeler & dealer and knew the contract, inside and out, upside down.

it was as if his 'buddy' lost the election, so, now i'm going to take my toys and go home. give doyle the cold shoulder.

And with an attitude like that it could explain at least partially why he’s your “former” Station manager?

Good relationships should help you open doors but not be relied to get the favorable outcomes. Results should be about your arguments and your credibility.

As an example, during the last elections in MIA the incumbent group touted their relationship with management and it was a selling point. The eventual winning group was portrayed as not being liked therefore the results wouldn't be favorable against management.

Results: Many Advisories and CR-1's because management knew it would be settled later, but they could send their message. Do as we say or...

Today, 80% less written Advisories and management knows they need to make sure they have their ducks in a row if they pursue unnecessary discipline.

Yes, you need a relationship but you shouldn't have to rely solely on that because it can be used against you.

Ok wait a minute here. I call absolute and total BS on this. WOW I never thought you were another one of those guys who thinks all the heavy lifting needs to be done by others. I only really go back far enough to see in my participation what the TWU was “trying” to do under Little and I’m not sure it was as HUGE an issue prior to him although giving away our Union work has been a problem since before I walked in the door.

I think Samuelsen is pushing much harder than Little did BUT he was also putting in the effort too.

Now post a link for what that “AMT only” Union has done?

i believe that former station manager (de sena) got up in years and the rest is history. met him once or twice...NY guy, big yankees fan. i never needed him to save my job, but he did bring back many, many, many fscs after they were fired.

rodriguez rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. people skills with the rank & file weren't the best and he knew that...he didn't care.

in my station, it seems as though presidents are voted in, only to get voted out the next election. the former presidents here (biancalana & murphy) were top class. can't explain it. some people point to the social media phenomena, where these guys were a bit slow to respond..always reacting, never pro-acting.

No. Not the very day, but it was certainly a topic at the time and something the airline wanted to better manage. They went to an extreme by having only the major cities covered but eventually the ATD was able to get the letter expanded to all LAA Locals.

They changed the coding to UBC (union business continuance). The airline pays the representative then bills the Local for all approved UBC's.

That makes it harder for a local management team to accommodate extra officers at the Hall. They can code it something else like "meeting" but will raise flags.

This is for Fleet, I suspect it's the same for other Title groups but can't say for sure

LMAO. I guess it also doesn’t hurt when after one Month of the new administration taking office a new VP is announced for the Hub city. One who has a reputation for being more inclusive and friendly towards the employees than the tough as nails VP who was retiring.

Don’t let NYer fool you that he has the Magic Hammer to put Management in their place. If you have an A Hole leading the charge in the Station or the pitch battle directive is coming from even higher, well everyone’s gonna get a little bloody.

We used to have a Ramp Manager back in DFW names Bill Wiltshire who we LOVED. He was beyond fair and many of us were proud to have a Beer or two with him at the Big Apple Cafe.

When Bill was retiring we lined up along the ready lines with all sorts of vehicles. We shut down the ramp and weren’t going to open it again until he drove through so we could give him our own salute.

Don’t know if I’ll ever see something like that again for a Manager but I sure do hope so?

I guess you don’t have the same relationship with Management that DFW has then.

Crema I’m not going to lie to you but Juan is a friend of mine and I did encourage him to go for it. And it had nothing at all personal to do with Murphy who helped me out with a question and even sent me a shirt that I wear on the ramp.

It did seem like some people never really did catch on to the Social Media phenomenon and were always unfortunately a little behind the 8 Ball and trying to play catch up?

Hey if you’re not someone who has a vested interest or any Poitical motivations against Juan give the guy a chance. I think everyone deserves at least a good solid year to see if they’re gonna fly or not?

Weez -- is this the same "Magic Hammer" Tim claims to have? I think it may not be a management hammer, but the very same hammer that they use to drive square pegs into round holes with convoluted, and skewed arguments.

One would have to be as dumb as box of hammers, to believe them!
