The company has made it clear they don't want to give us anything. The last contract proposal the union gave the company, they scanned it and gave it back to the union saying "we are miles apart."

From what I've read in news stories and blogs, the two sides really weren't that far apart. It looked like both sides took a pretty reasonable approach considering the economic context, but just didn't make those final few steps toward each other. Hopefully the mediator can give a gentle shove to each side.
