ATR-72 in SBY

Good planes, I've never had problems on them.

I even flew one on Lao Aviation (which should have scared the hell out of me, but my only other option was flying on a YS-11)

Isn't the Roselawn accident -- and similar accidents in Europe -- the reason that AA pretty much banished the ATR to the SJU hub?

ATR -- Don't fly in ice.

That was a typical knee jerk FAA reaction to the Roselawn accident. I flew the ATR72 for a few years and there were no problems with that wing. There was however, a problem with holding in freezing rain and drizzle for over half an hour with flaps extended.
The ATR is a good airlplane that will haul a respectable load. Its biggest drawback was its mid teen crusing altitudes which makes for a lousy ride in the summer time.

As always, price will rule.I flew the atr to guadelope on aa eagle.good flight. With the past airbus order, price is the key concern with this outfit.I personally feel airbus products are sold as disposable airframes and with the advancement of new technology, perhaps this concept is valid.I feel airbus made very generous terms to secure the orders gained at the paris air show. Remember when american auto makers were losing market share, they offered zero percent fianancing, long warranties, and other perks.Airbus is doing the same thing with escape clauses dealing with performance specs and delays.Airbus being number 2 has to try harder.I was sad when no boeing planes were ordered. The 737-900er is a better plane that has longer legs than the airbus A321 which was ordered. The leading carriers have ordered boeings, but US is going to be an all airbus fleet.

I dont mind the atr's and the dash's are long overdue for replacement. Will the order be for the 68 seat model only or will the 42 seat model also join the fleet? Many express markets will not support a 70 seat plane and i hope the 100's will not stay around.

I also hope any order includes a mix of either Q400s and Q300s or ATR-72s and ATR-42. However, 42 seats aren't that much more than 37 seats on a Dash-8-100/Q200. With any potential order, I'd expect Piedmont's route structure to change dramatically. Personnally, I'd love to see a mixed order for the Q400s and Q300s.

At this moment a ATR-72 is sitting on Piedmont's SBY maintenance ramp for Demo later today. Early this year US Airways annouced it's intension to upgrade Piedmont's turboprop fleet. Maybe US Airways and Piedmont are serious about a 68-72 passenger truboprop upgrade. I'd attach a picture if I knew how.

Hopefully they don't let Johnny B. fly it. They may have to buy it afterwards.

Actually, it's a 20% increase in seats. The 100 is the only 37 seater we fly, but are almost always limited to 35 pax. 35+7 = +20%, and that's on a typical flight. Add gas, and you've sunk another passenger or more.

Personnally, I'd love to see a mixed order for the Q400s and Q300s.

You ain't alone in that statement. It makes the most sense- one type! The large prop order is rumored to be attached to a big order of planes. Isn't ATR a part of EADS? A huge bombardier order on the horizon instead?

The ATR is not a bad plane but the Q400 also has it share of problems.

Bombardier Faces $77 Million Claim (from SAS).
Story here: Toronto Star

STOCKHOLM – Airline group SAS AB said today it would request $77 million (U.S.) in compensation from Bombardier for costs and lost income due to accidents involving turboprops made by the Canadian aircraft maker.

SAS grounded its entire fleet of Q400 turboprops last month after two separate accidents in Denmark and Lithuania in which planes of that type crash-landed with landing gear malfunctions. No one was seriously injured in those accidents.

I don't believe Horizon had similar problems with any of their Q400's. I did read that Horizon found some minor corrosion, but never grounded their Q400 fleet.

the atr might be cheaper per unit, but when you include the different traning, parts, mtc costs, its probably a lose situation for airways compared to the more initially expensive 400's...

I'd bet you that ATR throws in all sorts of stuff with a deal for those things. Quite possibly a sim, spares, etc.

If the ATR turns out to be the choice, you won't see much change in our route structure. We might pick up some of the CLT flying we lost when half the -300s were sent up north, but there won't be too much expansion. The airplane just doesn't have the speed of the Q to be a true CRJ-200 replacement.

Given that Dougweiser has stated they want to replace some of the 50 seat RJs with 70 seat turboprops, methinks the final decision will still be with a Dash. I hope so anyway....

I really don't want to learn another airplane with this crackhead training dept... Doubt anyone else does either.

Rumor I hear is that he is trying to work a big Package Deal for Q's (PDT) and bigger CRJ's (PSA)!

Honestly I dont care, just pay me more to fly either! So lets just get some good news to PDT!! ATR or Dashes!!! Just F'in big it!!

Might be the only way to stop people from leaving! Honestly right now PDT has absolutely nothing to offer any new hire.........

Lets see....... 4-5 Year upgrade? Naw
Lets see...... Banging around in your 110 Degree 20 Year old Prop? Naw
Lets see...... Working continuous 12-14 hour days, going from AM to PM back to AM? Naw

There are a bunch of better choices out there! We gotta offer something good to get people to come here like the old days!!!

I think Eagle got rid of their '42s and now just has ATR-72-212As, and some old ATR-72s. The 212a's have 6 bladed curved props and are quieter than a jet. Cockpits are nice, think a little smaller than a 737. The overhead panel looks like a Airbus, and why shouldn't it, I think it's made by the same family. It actually is a really nice plane. T/O in a 45kt. direct x-wind and lands in a 35Kt. And you can pack it with people, cargo, and enough fuel for an alternate. They older ones aren't that great at higher elevation airports. Among other bases, I think Eagle used to fly them out of JFK.

i did a stint as a customer service trainer for the ATR 42 many years ago when they first came out. they are a great a/c. no weight restrictions very fast great avionics and fast turns. inflight very quiet. American has done very well with its Eagle operation over the years believe me if American likes them, then they work well. American does not fool around

the ATR family of a/c are very good. many european airlines have been using them over the years and they have great cruising altitutde and flight range they are an opponent to the dash coming out
